Name a New Zealand band.....

When I lived in NZ (12 years ago now), we had numerous visits from musical luminaries such as Sonic Youth, Henry Rollins and Nirvana who all made similar noises to the effect of "We don't make money playing your country but we come anyway because we love your underground/independent music scene. We're big fans of such and such and so and so".

So, who can name a half-decent NZ band? I'm curious to see how well known some of my favourite music really is!

Oh, good. List thread. Could people tell us a little bit about these bands and why they like/dislike them? Cheers.

New Zealand has the best Noise/psyche scene outside of Japan. It's principle architects being a band called Dead C. Mostly improvised and heavily guitar based. They have just a split 12" (with the awesome Konono no.1) on Brighton's Fat Cat records which I would recommend very highly.

There are loads more of course. NZ is (was?) the home to Flying Nun records which had the Chills, who I don't know much about so I'll let someone else talk about them. I understand that they are highly regarded by many a discerning muso.

Yep, Crowded House and the Tall Dwarves. I actually have no music taste at all, I just like having records around because they tell me I'm pretty.

(Tall Dwarves, incidentally, are an NZ band who sound like Gorky's with a speed metal fetish, yum).

Mmm....I was originally going to add a little note to the summary stating that devotees of Crowded House need not post here...but it seemed a tad unfair. However, as its been raised....you might like to know that in their original line-up, CH were only one-third Kiwi, ex-Split Enz man Neil Finn being that third!

And yes, Flying Nun and its ilk were more what I was hoping for.....

Ooooh.

Salmonella Dub

That thread sort of sums up why. Groovy folk dub with lots of drum'n'bass breakouts and trippy feedback delays and minimal skanking lyrics and P-H-att bassllines and tight little three piece horn sections and and and they didn't play Glasto in the end 'cos they only got offered a measly £200!

Recommend 'Killer Vision' and 'Inside the Dub Plates' as that's all I've really heard so far.

Sticky Filth - Strange Scuzzpunk Trio from New Plymouth, been putting out albums since about 91. I can forgive them their dodginess for their beautiful songs.
Flesh D-Vice - Since 1986, still singing about possessed Cars and Heroin.
Straitjacket Fits - Classic songs inspiring awe...Shayne Carter was never as good as this afterwards.
Trinity Roots - Salmonella Dubs North Island brethren.
Black Chrome - Fucking loud, big Turbonegro fans...
Sommerset - THE Punk band of post-2000 NZ. I guess they're like NOFX or something. Thing is, they came from the SXE Hardcore scene, so their songs are actually good as opposed to NOFX. Just did their Final Tour to sellout crowds.
Shihad - BIG CHORDS. Shihad have been evolving since their beginnings as a ThrashMetal band in the early 90s into what they are now, a breathtaking Live show...they are incredibly versatile songwriters, their career has seen them go from Metal to Industrial to Pop to Stadium Rock..
P Money & Scribe - Urban Hip-Hop Kingz
Che Fu - Ex-Supergroove, Che is NZ's answer to Usher. Except of course he's fat and short. Fucking lovely voice though.

will i be shived for liking SPLIT ENZ? i mean, ain't a troupe (or actually half a battalion, what with all the line-up changes) of people that look like vaudevillian rejects doing new waveish pop-rock-something just plain charming? to me they were.

and talking of the TALL DWARVES nd the FLYING NUN LABEL of course reminds me of JEAN PAUL SARTRE EXPERIENCE, which had a lovely way of bending pop over their knees and spank it silly.

the other day a friend of mine passed me a cd by kiwi metal act JABBERWOCKY. well, i haven't really made up my mind about whether i like it or not, just wanted to mention it.

there's surely more that i can't think of right now...

Split Enz? Well, yeah, they sort of had something in their early days, with those weird haircuts and ever so slightly twisted songs. Many people never forgave them for pretending to be a totally Australian band in order to get known internationally. Their biggest album (I think) was "Corroboree" (c.1983), named after an anglicised Australian Aboriginal song and dance celebration (for want of a better description). In New Zealand, the Album was called "Waiata", the nearest Maori equivalent.

The Dead C....I saw them play once in Auckland's legendary (and now demolished) Gluepot Tavern. Or was it the Powerstation? They were so loud it hurt. It was often difficult to discern anything musical behind the feedback. I think I enjoyed it!

I think my favourite Flying Nun band has to be Sneaky Feelings. Soft jangly guitar and vocal harmony and songs about unrequited love and temporary misery! Some of them mutated into a band called The Dribbling Darts of Love, a name that to this day many people I know refuse to believe was real!

I used to like The Headless Chickens.

When panic

give me cruise control

Ooh, and the Remnants, and Madlight, just because, you know, THE BOYS from Bad Taste! Barry and Ozzie, sniff.

The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience stayed at our place once when they were on Tour. They were funny blokes, nice guys.

So they got the shit kicked out of them by Skinheads on Rohypnol. Mistaking Irony for Derision, as usual.

Ahhhh NZ Party Life in the 80s...*something akin to a Vietnam Flashback follows*

Why should I?

Why should I name a New Zealand band?

Uncomfortable with the commanding tone of this thread title.

Birchville Cat Motel are from NZ i believe.

Birthed from the same genepool as The Dead C I should imagine, and making heaps of absolutely stunning music.

The Boys from Bad Taste? Wow. Must hear.

On that note, sorry for the threadrot, but does anyone know the name of the band from 'Clerks' that sang "Chewbacca - What a Wookie!"?

No. No!

Why should I drink tea?

Why should I lie down?

Sorry Seth, that last "command" was actually an oblique reference to a fine album of the same name by the Abel Tasmans, an eclectic Flying Nun band famed for a weird mix folky rock with an orchestral fringe....

Another album "Hey Spinner" virtually overnight turned a hitherto term of derision into (for those in the know) a greeting of genuine affection.

Why was "hey spinner" a term of derision?

Brunner
13:45 / 05.08.05
Well, in NZ and probably elsewhere (though not heard the term for ages) a "spinner" was a term for somebody who wasn't all there, perhaps a few sheep short of a flock. "Hey Spinner" was often used to attract the attention of somebody who uttered something stupid in order that bigger insults could be hurled at them.

Surely that made it over the Tasman?

Yeah, the Bad Taste theme is by Pete O'Herne (Barry)'s band The Remnants, and the song you hear playing in Frank's car is Rock Lies, by Terry Potter (Ozzie)'s band Madlight. "That's elevator music for headbangers!"

Erm, never heard of it. We've got "Come in spinner!", which you yell whilst playing two-up...

If you want to talk about NZ Noise then let's not forget:

THE SKEPTICS: The first band with Samplers in the country. Uh-oh. They may look like Hairdressers, but they're using those instruments to CALL UPON THE DARK GODS OF THE TWILIT MILKSHEDS. The Skeptics were funny like Brecht, sad like Ang Lee... they were fucking enormous. Really. David D'ath was one hell of a frontman, somewhere between Nosferatu and The Joker. Cut short by Cancer, the band he left behind would later form NZ's other noise merchant roster...

CHILDREN'S HOUR: Before the Headless Chickens, there was Children's Hour. Chris Matthews has always been kinda fucked up, but in CH he was experimenting with some dangerous chemicals...

ALIEN/HUMAN: Two bands with the same members but in different amounts of Tin Foil and with different lights on stage bought from different Second-Hand Stores. Oh, and Human was always a bit more Death Metal than Alien. Matt, the Frontman, is a multimedia Superstar. Of course.

THE GORDONS: Simply put, Sonic Youth before there was ever a Sonic Youth. Later became Bailter Space.

Yep, Birchville Cat Motel are from NZ and are probably one of my favorite bands of the last five to six years. It's basically one guy, Campbell Kneale, who also runs one of the best labels around, Celebrate Psi Phenomenon. Check out anything on his label cuz it's all great. I would recommend "Beautiful Speck Triumph" as start off point (Speck was the name of his unborn child at the point of recording which is really cute) but he's released a new killer album called "Chi Vampires" which catalyzes a lot of his more Sunn0)) tendencies as of late. There's a ton of hard to get Cdrs he's put out on CPP which are all worth hunting down.

Then there's Antony Milton from NZ. He concentrates mostly on droney Dead C type of stuff but his stuff is more diverse. He's got a band with Campbell Kneale called With Throats as Fine as Needles which is great drone-synth-weird-shit. He also collaborates with the likes of Stephen Neville and Clayton Noone (sic?) who are in the great avant rock NZ bands, Pumice, and CJA (respectively). The amount of bands these guys all play in is immense, ranging from gutter/synth punk called The Futurians to sprawling avant rock instrumental stuff from The Stumps. Almost all of it has merit and is really exciting.

Dean Roberts is from NZ but I think he's living in Austria the last time I've heard so I'm not sure if he counts. He was in the NZ band, White Winged Moth and he's put out a couple of good albums on Kranky if you want more contemporary stuff of his. He has a nice, soothing but dynamic band called the Autistic Daughters with Martin Brandlmyr (Radian, Trapist) on percussion and Werner Dafeldecker (Efzeg, Poire_Z, etc) on bass, as well. Robert's stuff can range from static drones to pleasent indie rock and I'm always surprised more people don't know about him and his bands. Worth checking out if you lean to more polished work than the guys above.

Oooh, this thread is making me come over all nostalgic for the Gluepot, a cat called Spinner and pub quiz teams called the JPS Experience. I have to admit that I hated the the JPS Experience to start with - seeing them at the Gluepot when I was a 22-year-old rock chick has to count as one of the most confusing experiences of my life. Who were these people and what the heck was this all about?
I'm going to come out all uncool and admit I love the Front Lawn.

I don't feel like listing all my favourite NZ bands at the moment, but two I really dig are-

The 3Ds- really interesting, rocking, angular guitar pop sort of stuff. They wrote some amazing songs like Outer Space and Beautiful Things, but I think Sing Song is just about the best song ever written by anyone, anywhere, ever. Apparently they once turned down a North American tour supporting Nirvana because they had to work. I saw them play twice and they were great.

Loves Ugly Children- ferocious, unhinged, noisy indie/rock'n'roll. Kinda like Motorhead meets Superchunk or Shellac with catchy tunes or something. They were pretty incredible when I saw them live.

Ah the 3D's...now they were a truly great band. I loved their whirly, screaming, (almost) out of tune guitars! Meluzina Man and Sunken Treasure my personal fave songs! Apparently various members now make up Ghost Club who friends back in NZ have raved about.
