People, people. User number, forum number. If you can't handle that much of the technicals, you're going to struggle with moderation more generally.

Boboss: Cool. I think you’d do a good job at both. Well, *presuming* lula’s okay with that, that would be:

User:490

Start:10,11

User:2004

Remove:11

...and we await lula’s blessing of your ascent to mod-dom.

Sorry, Haus, my bad. I would've done so had I been sure that I would be accepted. I thought doing it the proper way might be a little presumptuous at this point. Silly of me, I know.

Cheers for doing it for me Bed Head.

Did I miss something Bed Head? If there's a probem with olulabelle modding 7 fora then shouldn't someone ask her which one she would like to lose rather than having it all but decided for her?

Gosh, a response to something I’ve said.

Miss something? Maybe you did. My view is here: I was feeling kinda weird about some of the posts last night, if the taking on of several extra modding responsibilities is going to prevent several new mods from being introduced. It’s all back-to-front. New mods as a priority, then with the one-for-one swapping around, then remaining gaps can be filled by existing people who want to do more. Surely?

At the time, Lula replies to say she understands what I mean.

I haven’t decided anything for anybody. Lula can disagree, and I’ll either mod my post or she can do it in-thread herself. But I’m on record as being uneasy with existing mods expanding their responsibilities to include fora that we have new mods queueing up to help out in, and film would be one of those. If she wants to help mod lots of places, I hadn’t expected this would be an issue, and I’d like to hear what qualifies her over Boboss. I think I may have posted something recently about how it’d be good to have a process of selection for public appointments...

My personal feeling on this is that we're looking for lots of moderators here, so it's not an issue. I don't think we're going to have a situation where someone who wants to mod doesn't get a chance.

One of the things I'm keen on is that new moderators don't start with the Head Shop or Switchboard (for example) but that instead they start off gently with one or two of the less controversial fora. That'll get them into the space and the head-set and let other people get the feel of them as moderators. Then in a few months we'll do another one of these processes and people who were new can start modding a wider variety (and more politically sensitive) fora. As I've said, on the whole I'd rather mods only looked after five or six fora at a maximum, but I'm giving a few people a little more leeway since they've been around since the beginning and have invested so much in keeping the board together that I would feel churlish and insulting to strip them of responsibilities. I'm going to leave that stuff up to them (but recommend that they make sure they're focused only on fora that they genuinely visit regularly).

With regards to the new guys, I'm quite happy with the idea that we could have up to fourteen or even fifteen moderators per fora, so I don't think there are going to be problems with new volunteers.

Now now, let's not snark. I appreciate your concerns as posted in the other thread, but you may have scared off a discussion by being just a teensy bit verbose. I think we all understand your idea of setting up a schedule to work out where the gaps are and who wants to do what, but I'm not entirely sure that it's not a little bit over the top. I reckon a separate thread would be good to discuss that issue, as grant suggested.

I know you haven't decided for lula, but you've put her in a weird position. And there is as far as I know, no absolute limit on mods per forum. Tom suggested ten to twelve but it's not law. I also think Boboss would be an excellent mod but I don't see anything to stop him being appointed as things now stand.

You seem to have assumed the reality of what you originally posited as merely a concerning possibility:

if the taking on of several extra modding responsibilities is going to prevent several new mods from being introduced.

I agree that new mods should not be kept out by older mods having too many fora, but I wasn't aware that it had happened as yet.

My above post was a response to Bed, obviously ...

At the time boboss was thinking he’d missed his chance. My post was in response to that. Tom’s just now announced his intention to have several more mods per forum; unless I’ve missed it before, that’s new. And a very good thing.

And you talk about things 'not being law', but I'm a *teensy* bit frustrated at expressing concerns and trying to discuss issues related to any changes, and instead changes are just happening.

I will accept that things might be moving faster than people had expected and that this may look like a circumvention of process. This is partly my fault in just not having time to work out if a consensus has been reached. It's not an excuse, but maybe it's an explanation.

What I suggest is that we think of this as an interim way of operating - we'll get the moderators moved around and a few new ones plugged into place and then we'll start a slightly longer conversation about moderators and how we should choose them - we could set a date at which point we could switch to any system that people came to consensus about? Does that sound fair? That way, everyone has soemthing to work towards?

Also,

you may have scared off a discussion by being just a teensy bit verbose

Yeah. That’ll be it. No discussion on barbelith was ever kicked off by someone being verbose, what was I thinking. I think maybe your I'm not entirely sure that it's not a little bit over the top is more like it, and I think it’s a shame that, because it’s not their noses in danger of being put out of joint, lots of posters clearly don’t give a shit about organising systems to make other people’s experience of barbelith more involving and rewarding.

End of rot. Carry on, chaps.

Argh. Sorry, Tom. Cross-post.

Yeah. Let’s just have the discussion. And I’m not really suggesting any of this is your fault, Tom. The discussion had just stopped dead. You reacted to the situation you were presented with.

Before we give anyone moderator status, can we make sure they could start a punch-up in an empty room? OK Thnx bye.

Okay, now I've been bitten by a radioactive moderator... When does the whole approving of mod requests come in? I've picked up from other mod talk that these actions are supposed to be listed in a queue somewhere but I can't see it, so I guess nothing needs doing in Convo or G&G right now.

Can anyone give me a quick cap of how the process works, please?

I have performed some moderation actions that may not be entirely necessary, just for you. Feel free to disagree them if you need to.

I don't post much in Lab but I love reading it and I've spotted a few simple moderation requests I'd like to put through. I'd really, really love to be a moderator in the forum.

If I could pass my Gathering hat on to some new blood, I’d like to move somewhere more meaty.
If familiarity is the watchword, I read with interest everything in the Policy (and try to be helpful). I’m also across pretty much everything in the Conversation, if I’d be of more use there.

So,

I'm back on the net quite a bit (work and home) and would be happy to do mod requests by day and add to the quality of convo toward the l8r home hours.

More active on both the Art / Gaming worlds as well and would like to add more to the activity.

I'm interested in becoming more involved, but I wasn't sure how needed moderators are for the fora I'm interested in:

9, 10, 11, 12

These are the ones I post semi-regularly, 10 and 11 moreso than 9 and 12, but 9 and 12 look a little light.

Anyway...I'm interested.
