Regrettable Juvenilia

Let's start with the assertion that the dominant form of artistic expression in some musical genres is the single, rather than the album. If that's the case, then Ciara's doing a pretty good job of owning r&b in 2005: she's three for three, with each new Jazze Phizzle-produced single upping the ante.

'Goodies' - all pent-up tension and cold, aloof distance - "look but don't touch" given sonic form - with Petey Pablo being cocky as hell.

'1, 2 Step' - 90% of all songs about the joy of dancing have been scientifically proven to be awesome, and this is no exception. The beat sounds almost like microhouse, the lyrics are outstanding, and it's got Missy Elliott on it. What's not to love?

'Oh' - fantastically languid, with Ludacris showing up as if to confirm that he saves all his best material for guest appearances these days. Flickflickflickflickflick!

Any other fans here?

Honestly? Her voice sounds like, well, little more than air, and not in a good way, and there's not an ounce of enthusiasm to it, as I hear it. But then, that IS the only single I've heard, so hey, I'll hush.

Still. Vocal blank and blandness, much?

In what way? Do you mean that it's not audible enough? She's not hollering like, say, Amerie on '1 Thing' - not conveying wild, pull-your-own-hair crazed enthusiasm in that sense, but I think there's room for more than one approach. I said of 'Goodies' (which, I need to correct myself by saying, was produced by Lil Jon) in another thread "there's very little in the way of release, and this is as true of the vocals as anything else. There's maybe one moment where Ciara cuts loose with her lungs, the rest of the time it's just this kind of tight-lipped mutter..." - I think that holds true for '1, 2 Step' as well.

Everything's sublimated into this strict insistence on dancing. The title is describing quite a small movement, and when I hear that song, it makes me think of a very precise, disciplined sort of dancing. The human body voluntarily converted into as accurate a time-keeping machine as possible, tightly regimented, under the control of the beat. I find it almost teutonic, actually. Certainly not bland.

Can't say I'm a fan either...Aaliyah Lite, without the revelatory production and Wu Wei...To get really petty about it, I also think her dancing's crap and she should sneer less on camera - worked for Elvis, not for Ciara.

I like the tension in Goodies, partly the way that everything seemed to be "hidden", the melodies I mean. I don't know if "hidden" is actually the right way to describe it, but it was like it wasn't obvious; that sine sound for the main theme, that was a little like a radio, helped in this respect.

If this is relevant, she also looks more like a confident, healthy woman, as opposed to some form of FHM con-cock-tion.

There's certainly room for more than one approach, sure, but I don't think hers turns out nicely... It doesn't sound (again, to me) as an effective subdued style, as you put it, as much as a disappointing lack of energy that is expected to be coming through... and isn't.

But then, this might just unsurprisingly come down to pure subjectivity in that her voice fails to grip me, and not an actual problem with the product (do think that song is reasonable as it is, and might have worked for me had there been a voice strong (not literally loud) enough to pull me in).

(Oh, and off-topic-ish, but now that you mention 1 Thing; I don't think that by comparison that is The Way To Go ™, but is it joyously shit-hot or is it just little ol'moi?)

agreed. sort of.

"Oh" was my favorite song of 2004. Best fucking beat in "crunk." That mother just ROLLS.

Disagreed. I hate that effing song. 1 Thing, not Oh.

But I love 1, 2 step, so perhaps I want my songs a little less obvious. And annoying.

Ciara *does* come across as a successor to Aliiyah, especially in 1, 2 step, which sounds more than just a little like Try Again. But it is so fabulous and slightly 80s that I really don't mind.

Flyboy, have you bought the album? Thoughts on it as a whole?

I kept hearing 1, 2 Step, in barbers, in passing while caging a lift from someone, and kept trying to remember the name of who was singing it or the title, but never could. Then got Missy E's album, recognised the voice, and there you have it. I kind of like the way that the song has so much going on that her voice is almost lost amongst it. Plus anything with Missy Elliot near it I like.
