Multiple Personality disorder, or MPD, is a bizarre syndrome in which two or more distinct personalities inhabit a single body. People who suffer from this disorder , or "multiples", often have an awareness of their condition. They do not realize that control of their body is being passed back and forth between different personalities and instead feel they are suffering from some kind of amnesia, confusion, or black-out spells. Most multiples average between eight to thirteen personalities, although so-called super-multiples may have more than a hundred subpersonalities.

One of the most telling statistics regarding multiples is that 97 percent of them have had a history of severe childhood trauma, often in the form of monstrous psychological, physical, and sexual abuse. This has led many researchers to conclude that becoming a multiple is the psyche's way of coping with extraordinary and soul-crushing pain. By dividing up into one or more personalities the psyche is able to parcel out the pain, in a way, and have several personalities bear what would be too much for just one personality to withstand.

In this sense becoming a multiple may be the ultimate example of what Bohm means by fragmentation. It is interesting to note that when the psyche fragments itself, it does not become a collection of broken and jagged-edged shards, but a collection of smaller wholes, complete and self-sustaining with their own traits, motives, and desires. Although these wholes are not identical copies of the original personality, they are related to the dynamics of the original personality, and this in itself suggests that some kind of holographic process is involved.

Another unusual feature of MPD is that each of a multiple's personalities possesses a different brain-wave pattern. In addition to possessing different brain-wave patterns, the subpersonalities of a multiple have a strong psychological separation from one another. Each has his own name, age, memories, and abilities. Often each also has his own style of handwriting, announced gender, cultural and racial background, artistic talents, foreign language fluency, and IQ.

Even more noteworthy are the biological changes that take place in a multiple's body when they switch personalities. Frequently a medical condition possessed by one personality will mysteriously vanish when another personality takes over.

Dr. Bennet Braun of the International Society for the Study of Multiple Personality, in Chicago, has documented a case in which all of a patient's subpersonalities were allergic to orange juice, except one. If the man drank orange juice when one of his allergic personalities was in control, he would break out in a terrible rash. But if he switched to his nonallergic personality, the rash would instantly start to fade and he could drink orange juice freely.

Allergies are not the only thing multiples can switch on and off. If there was any doubt as to the control of the unconscious mind has over drug effects, it is banished by the pharmacological wizardry of the multiple. By changing personalities, a multiple who is drunk can instantly become sober. Different personalities also respond differently to different drugs.

Braun records a case in which 5 milligrams of diazepam, a tranquilizer, sedated one personality, while 100 milligrams had little or no effect on another.

Often one or several of a multiple's personalities are children, and if an adult personality is given a drug and then a child's personality take over, the adult dosage may be too much for the child and result in an overdose. It is also difficult to anesthetize some multiples, and there are accounts of multiples waking up on the operating table after one of their "unanesthetizable" subpersonalities has taken over.

Other conditions that can vary from personality to personality include scars, burn marks, cysts, and left- and right-handedness. Visual acuity can differ, and some multiples have to carry two or three different pairs of eyeglasses to accommodate their alternating personalities. One personality can be color-blind and another not, and even eye color can change.

There are cases of women who have two or three menstrual periods each month because each of their subpersonalities has its own cycle.

Speech pathologist Christy Ludlow has found that the voice pattern for each of a multiple's personalities is different, a feat that requires such a deep physiological change that even the most accomplished actor cannot alter his voice enough to disguise his voice pattern.

One multiple, admitted to a hospital for diabetes, baffled her doctors by showing no symptoms when one of her nondiabetic personalities was in control.

There are accounts of epilepsy coming and going with changes in personality, and psychologist Robert A. Phillips, Jr. reports that even tumors can appear and disappear (although he does not specify what kind of tumors).

Multiples also tend to heal faster than normal individuals. For example, there are several cases on record of third-degree burns healing with extraordinary rapidity. Most eerie of all, at least one researcher, Dr. Cornelia Wilbur, the therapist whose pioneering treatment of Sybil Dorsett was portrayed in the book Sybil - is convinced that multiples don't age as fast as other people.

At a recent symposium on the multiple personality syndrome, a multiple named Cassandra provided a possible answer. Cassandra attributes her own rapid healing ability both to the visualization techniques she practices and to something she calls "parallel processing". As she explained, even when her alternate personalities are not in control of her body, they are still aware. This enables her to "think" on a multitude of different channels at once, to do things like work on several different term papers simultaneously, and even "sleep" while other personalities prepare her dinner and clean her house.

Hence, whereas normal people only do healing imagery exercises two or three times a day, Cassandra does them around the clock. She even has a subpersonality named Celese who possesses a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and whose sole function is to spend twenty-four hours a day meditating and imaging the body's well-being. According to Cassandra, it is this full-time attention to her health that gives her an edge over normal people. Other multiples have made similar claims.

From the book "Holographic Universe"
Holographic Universe
by Michael Talbot

Talbot explains the theory advanced by U. of London physicist David Bohm and Stanford U. neurophysiologist Karl Pribram that despite its apparent tangible reality, the universe is actually a kind of three- dimensional projection and is ultimately no more real than a hologram, a three-dimensional image projected into space. The book has some amazing stories.

that's fascinating stuff.

I'm wondering about Alan Moore's fictitious mayor of NY City in Promethea. One of his personalities had multiple personalities...

I'm curious how this relates to notions of channeling or possession or archetypal behaviour. Are the multiples are constant shifting of archetypes from the subconscious (where they are always aware) to the conscious (where they display themselves to the world, as a persona)?

if one persona is overwhelmed with a situation to the point where they can't function, does another step in - a supportive compatibility?

I think the 24-healer is a remarkable adaptation, and one I deign to explore through magic.

how remains to be seen.

According to RD Laing the Body Mind seems made up of an overwhelming sea of selves, and different masks and personas. The Gospel according to Bandler and all through the flexilbilty of NLP and Syntony and Post Modern Cybernetics seems that we all possess alot of different personas for different occassions the so called Multi MInd Model. DID/MPD/etc can all come under the guise of the Medical Systemised Control State - the DSM Manual comes forthwilingly with all good doctors. It depends how you reframe and what frame you want to posit your bag of beliefs at. Some people are of course anti-psychiatrists and don't trust them. In the nexus of Magick and Shamanism we are effectively working with a very potent and hard form of dealing with obsessions and possessions. Trauma can effectively draw out other selves to hide behind, anyone could effectively draw up a selve to hide behind either to fit in with the peer group they are attempting to penetrate or a mask to cover up their unhappiness and abuse by others or their selves-abuse either through drugs or childhoods or booze or inter-personal relationships. Shamanism portays a similar veil except more spiritualised. I do believe they call it New Code NLP or Shamanix that is The Search For A Possible And Ineffable Gold That Lurks Within. Having gone through a drug psychosis with the tail ends of a horrible Social Anxiety Syndrome that is toxic effects of selves-abuse. I've been through life with clutching at silly selves my self some of it harrowing some of it enlightening. We call them belief shifts or paragigm shifts - it's a part of life. Most people in life just stay in the same town and never metamorphosise into other things. Change seems the only currents here. With drugs you have to exert caution that is never get cained by the fuckers just cain them and then take it or leave it - it's like smoking. They can become a habit forming pattern for people to cope with life. I'm on a detox just now I spent over 15 years on drugs and booze. I got the fears with Ketamine and Ectasy and Amphetamine use - all night dry sweats imaginal horrors indeed. I covered that up with booze and that just made that worse, inedeed I started to become violent and experienced horrible situatuions with others. I gave up for the sake of others and myself. I've even had problems with my bisexualities I've surfed from boyfriend to girlfriend and again and again, some others just can't handle bisexualities and some others are just plain fucking stupid in their ignorance and put-downs some people are still playing out the mediatised nuclear family compulsive heterosexualised fantasies that they are moslty born themselves into. People are products of their childhoods and of their socailisation - you pattern after your friends and your parents and your so called mentors. It's very easy to get caught up in the head beams of an encoming car whilst plying out the rabbit archetype if you know what I mean. It's very easy to get caught up in alternative religiuosmovements, cultist beliefs, ideological groups, etc. It's very easy to fall into labels manufactured by you self and also by others. I would also say that some of the horrors that we can fall into say like the mythos of Clive Barker with the Cenobites can twin us with pleasure and pain the ultimate of all dualities of emotions. To break open the seals is to eventually touch heavens and potential hells, and to practise bad magick on your self and others may twist in remarkable karma's and bounce back like a hell of a demolition derby or a pastiche of It's A Knockout where it can become like laughs. To overdose on chemognosis can become like hell, I've arrived there many a time, psychosis will grab your strongest modality strength and rip it apart, it's upto you whether you grab it by the horns yourself or seek out help from the institutionalised services albeit through systemised drugs or therapy or psychiatry or try to apply a self-healing. To paraphrase you have to exert caution in all fields of chemognosis even alchohol look at Absinthe though I've smoked loads of Wormwood before it gets you there quicker. The downside of the chemical generation seems a clique of burnt out heads who have either took bad drugs (we need drugs testing now and laws because drugs will always exist with us they are a mirror to the chemistry industries) and felt the cosequences or people who should have never have taken them in the first place as they wer too fragile. Fragilty of the selves and possible fragmentation exist all too passionately clear, the permutations endless for this hard gnosis. Don't be a sily sausage. Ecolgy checks run the day I've seen people go blue on smack, people freak out, I've freaked out before, people that have needed to calm down have needed it. Sometimes a good ear and a good friend are all we need to burst the paradigm of losing it. Unhappy childhoods need to get cast aside before any progress can happen as in through time therapies, as in loosening them time bound moments that have plagued us forever. But don't take my word as the gospel I am just a normal person in the end who is not happy about where he lives in society and his station in life, but then I have dropped out of the mainstream and I don't like the mainstream at all.

This sounds really interesting. Could you give me some sources? Links, books, whatever.

As with all things it's all in the mind and belief and reality tunnels dictate whatever the Operator presumes or assumes. I have seen TV programmes about MPD people and have read about the machinations of MPD. It seems highly possible that people may suffer from False Personality Disorders and/or Munchausens Syndrome where they either decide to play up for others (as a form of attention) or where they seem obsessed with possessions or the premise of personalities taking over. Surely the whole point would seem to glue the fragmented selves together as in a form of wholistic healing or respect that self aspect or treat and exoricise it by any other means. Certainly if you do believe in the arena of Multi Mind then you may respect that paradigm and heal you selves but alot of people do not even believe in the premise of Multi Mind they see the mind as a whole - even the premise of Multi Mind could install a belief in the Multiple Selves, and may cause either a fragment in the selves or in effect for someone to heal themselves. Self Healing takes alot of time - to heal theselves one needs to do the process themselves and not rely on an exterior agent. A long and hard process. In one hand magick and NLP embraces this process. EFT works wonders and can get utilised for self-healing.

Ive found other info hard to come by, i read the extract from the above book by michael talbot some years ago, great book, but had forgotten it, until listening to one of those self help tapes where it was mentioned that mpd's could move birth marks and change eye colour the point being the power of the mind, to reinforce this guys tape.

There seem to be scrapes online and i dont know of much research in this area.

what grabbed me from it was the absolute enormity of sitting listening to somebody as there eyes change colour infront of you. what appeals to me would be a controlled state, that creates the dissassociation nessecary for unconscious personas to manifest, thou thinking about it, techniques that induce lack of control and body/ spirit seperation already exsist in many traditions, the key seems to be the pre exsistence of already exsisting personas, entity forms to then manifest in the dissassociator.

cues may work, like the props actors employ to assume character, such and such a costume means a certain kind of personal force etc etc. i am mulling it over still.

I feel the need to question the evidence behind the movement of birth marks because I'm not sure that's physically possible and I'd like to see evidence of exactly how marks have moved.

Here's a resource for you to read- dissociation in the UK. There are reports of variation in physiological function across identity states (e.g., differences in visual acuity, pain tolerance, symptoms of asthma, sensitivity to allergens, and response of blood glucose to insulin).

There is also a Wiki about DID here.

Personally I wouldn't recommend seeking out this extent of dissociation or in fact any actual dissociation at all because the props actors employ to assume character are not dissociation, they're props. At the same time I'm interested in what anyone who attempted dissociation would be trying to remove from integration specifically identity, memory, or consciousness. I don't think dissociation is anything like hallucinogenic experience because you're still yourself simply perceiving things a little differently.

perhaps on small doses of hallucinogens, but not on alot larger doses, something else comes into play that pushes you right out of the picture, something very alien, yet familiar.

i think the actor comparisson, i was attempting to liken to the possession experience some actors experience, it definately isnt just the props.

As a form of illness disassociation is traumatising and i am not suggesting people become ill, but i am suggesting that dissassociation bears resembalance to certain states of magical consciousness in some ways, and also carries some qualities that are desirable, for example the 24 hour healer mentioned in the extract, or a persona that is in a constant visualisation.

something i discovered practicing mantra was that the mantra continued as a voice inside of me, sometimes becoming a chorus of voices, but i could think, compare and communicate while the mantra repeated internally.
as a chorus formed it would give me a sense of one pointed ness, eventually as i would defocus the mantra would remain, the internal concentration remained, but the external then became more interactable again.

another comparrisson, but not the same as would be the ability of the human mind to multi task, is one mind performing various tasks, or are mini minds attending to various proceedures? i dont know , but i feel its worth asking the question.

and personally i think monotheism and the idea of one mind is an outright lie.

An example, when i was an alcoholic, arguably i still am, i had certain kinds of behaviours and a persona that went with those behaviours, now when i quit those behaviours that persona didnt go away, and it still rears its ugly head. the drunk that wants sympathy, cause the world has treated him bad, the drunk that hates women because all his relationships fail and it has nothing to do with drinking and drugs and being responsible, the drunk that just wants to destroy himself cause its all pointless and meaningless and well nothing ever works, especially relationships and friendships.

For me thats a very seperate persona, to the bloke i am now six years clean, the drunk hasnt gone anywhere and he still clambers out ocassionally for days or weeks, but when i first quit that was months and years, six years down the line i can catch him a little better but not always.

The bloke i am now, likes exercise, tries not to define himself by the drugs he takes and the attendent youth cultures he bought into to take those drugs, he tries to enjoy life rather than condemn it as worthless, he tries to find new meaning in things, he enjoys helping other people, rather than fucking them up, he wants to learn new things, meet new people rather than right them all off as using no good shits.

but occasionally i am that drunk, whining, replacing the alcohol with food and strong coffee, sitting on the net all day wondering why he doesnt have too many friends.laying in bed cause none of its worth it.The drunk is a completely different character, it really isnt me as i know myself now.But when i am the drunk it really isnt worth it and you really are no good fucks, good for nothing.

That drunk doesnt need alcohol, he exsists in me, i really dont like him and his attitudes, and cannot find a way to integrate him successfully so i can be a whole person, i can only recognise him as he surfaces and try to manage his infantile mood swings, lusts and desires. Id love to find away to make use of him otherwise, put his energy and stamina to good use, i could do alot of drugs and drink, id love to employ that enthusiasm in other areas, but even after neigh on 6 years i am dealing with the drunk, i ve managed to push some of him into exercise, martial arts etc, but am worlds away from dealing with him as a whole or integrating him into the personas id like to be.

jekyll and hyde.
