Absolute Power series 2

Me, I love Absolute Power. They really shouldn't have screwed with the running order, as ID Crisis had, if anything, more references to terrorism than the original opener, especially to suicide bombings and a Bin Laden lookalike on screen talking about London. The Nation's Favourite, on the other hand, was a clevely constructed episode that had a Bin Laden in it. ID Crisis was just a straightforward, and not very representative, story of an ethically dodgy campaign.

"I caught the first fifteen minutes of Absolute Power and thought it stunk, but I wouldn't want to clog this thread up with a post about why," said the Dupre in the Extras thread.

I can see why. The issue at hand (ID cards) is a complex one, and to see the team dropped straight into a situation where they are supporting them unconditionally (the objections were very badly written) looks as if the programme is supporting them. Without the set-up of the original opening episodes where Prentiss is shown as an (almost) principled man - literally telling the government to fuck off at several points - who ends up having to take the Queen's shilling, it looks like an endorsement rather than the weary resignation it was probably supposed to be.

Anyway Randy, what was the problem for you?

I just found what I watched of it to be horribly wooden. The performances from all the cast - but especially the woman playing the Home Secretary - lacked any sort of spark or energy. Fry and Bird's characters were indistinguishable from each other and may as well have been one person. Jokes were obvious and dull. It was like a public information film masquerading as a sitcom - Lawson taking the opportunity to say, "hey, ID cards are bad, mmmmmkay?" but forgetting to put any actual comedy into it.

On that, I notice that Lawson wrote this episode himself. Wasn't the first series a collaborative effort with a couple of others? If so, I think that could be the cause of the problem right there, because this, as far as I'm concerned, didn't possess half the wit or intelligence of any of that previous series.
