100 People Who Are Saving America

After watching John Stewart dismantle this guy and his book of people he doesn't like, I thought it would be much better to select people for praise than condemnation. People who are saving America and making it better.

Who are these people in your mind? Why do they deserve to be among the 100 who are saving America?

John Gorka, Folk artist, www.johngorka.com, he is an everyday hero. Not the most famous, but always making a difference through his music and his words.

Strangely, I'd say most of the people on the list, especially Ted Rall, who's a bit of a dick, but puts his money where his mouth is.

I dunno, I kind of feel that this project is doomed from the get go because it's going to take a lot more than 100 people to 'save America' whatever that means. My point is that it is not about 100 people saving america - it is about individual Americans taking an active role in carving an America that they want to live in, that they want their children to live in.

Yes, it is up to each of us, but I think that random recognition is a good fuel to the fire of hard work and good deeds.

Actually, there was this guy, he was in Time about three months ago... one of the leading voices in the ecological design movement, building "green" houses (as opposed to greenhouses) that were convenient/luxurious rather than fringey and difficult.

Wish I could remember his name. I can picture his face very clearly.

I think Jon Stewart should be on the list. He is pretty much the top critic of how the US media has been failing the public for the past three years. He's moved from a stand up comic delivering jokes at a desk to a solid satirist and excellent interviewer.

I thought I'd suggest him before Flyboy did.

I agree with the Jon Stewart pick.
I'd add Amy Domini, founder and head of the fairly successful Domini Social Investments. Whether or not social investing makes a huge difference economically, I think the concept can make a big, though perhaps gradual, difference culturally.

Ted Kennedy. One of the only senators who says exactly what he thinks and cuts through neocon bullshit.

William McDonough seems to be the man.

I'm sure there are other good candidates up on that webspace.

Greg Kats does seem interesting, though.
