heard down the pub on saturday that there is a fully blown shoe-gazing revival going on around a club night in hoxton town and to be honest am sure if it was a wind up or not, but then got to thinking that this scene had it's merits first time around and was unfairly pigeonholed with that awful name. when you listen to the best of my bloody valentine or the pale saints, well in their totally different ways they both had some great moments. anyhow was wondering if it was in fact true and who these new oyung bands are. thanks.

I'm stunned that the style of music hasn't been absorbed by Emo kids. Especially pretentipous Stereolab Emo Kids.

What the fuck are "pretentipous Stereolab Emo kids" when they're at home?

Is that saying that Stereolab is pretentipous or that emo kids that like Stereolab are pretentipous?

And no, I have not heard the term Nu-Gazer.

Nu-Gazer -- it's like shoegazer meets nu-metal!

One of the guys from Linkin Park got together with some of the dudes from Ride, and the new single TOTALLY ROCKS so hard I had to go LIE DOWN for HOURS!

Is someone dissing Stereolab?

Yes, I've heard of this shoegazer-club, but I didnt realise that there were actual new shoegazer bands playing at it (shudder...), I thought it was just a "revive" night where people play records by bands from that dubious, though occasionally quite interesting, scene. I might be wrong on that front though. I can probably find out if you're that interested.

"nu-gaze" is perhaps the stupidest made-up music genre name I have ever heard. Which is saying something.

And those swathes of feedback have never gone out of fashion round this way, buster.

Having said that though, a "shoegaze" club night sounds like the worst idea ever. Can you IMAGINE a room of people trying to dance to something off 'Loveless'? And that would probably be one of the more upbeat tunes? Not gonna happen.

It would only work if they had free drugs, and big, soft cushions. Which I doubt they do.

i love dancing to that last track off loveless, the one that was on the glider EP too, a total groover, and the weatherall mix of it sounds like the best record Can never made.
i suppose like all made up genres it is just a way of marketing some interesting new music loosely influenced by some old stuff. be very interested to here from anyone who makes it tho. i am old and unlikely to ever bother really.

Yes, Soon is dancefloor heaven. You could probably have a good bop to some of Isn't Everything and the You Made Me Realise EP is also jigworthy.

Early Ride (before they went mod) were bliss and Leave Them All Behind is their prog-shoe masterpiece.

Was just young/old enough to catch the tail end of 'the scene that celebrates itself' and appreciate some of it. But apart from a handful of Lush, Curve and Boo Radleys tracks, I don't revisit that era all that often, although - like Rizla - I like a good swathe as much as the next man.

I've not heard any of this 'Nu-Gaze' you speak of, but I believe Engineers may be involved...? Personally, I'm happy with the modern electronica types who've taken the best fuzzy elements and exploited them (eg: Caribou, Khonnor, Tim Hecker). Although, I might be up for investigating/infiltrating one of these new retro-shoe nights, for a laugh. More info please, doctorbeck. Sonic cathedrals, drugs and cushions, tho: Perhaps what Leicester needs, hmm Riz?

I suppose, in a way, Shoegazing was a bit like really slow Krautrock, but with more effects pedals. However, I am drunk and might be wrong...

Nu-Gaze is a shitty NME name for shoegazing, I assume it's a stupid idea to sell it to "da Kids". As Riz points out
"those swathes of feedback have never gone out of fashion round this way, buster. "
Damn! Fucking! Right!
Did no one else notice that post rock and shoegazing are pretty much the same thing?
Weird that this got started I've been thinking about starting a thread for people to stand up and say I love Slowdive and refuse to be mocked!
Listen to Henry by the Pale Saints really, really loudly.
Magic.

o I've got the Engineers cd and it's pretty good, so who are the other bands in the Nu-gaze scene.
I feel filthy, in a very bad way, for using the then Nu-Gaze. Urgh.

Must agree with those who are wary of a new (sorry, nu) genre being created - "folktronica" still brings me out in an allergic reaction as will nu-gazing.

It's either music you like or you don't - all these genre terms are basically marketing.

Did no one else notice that post rock and shoegazing are pretty much the same thing?

Yup. Hang about, be back later... going to another thread due to incoming news.

Anyway, have found myself getting more and more drawn to examples of this sort of stuff, especially those on the border between guitars and laptops.

Bands and artists like M83 (first album anyway, haven't got the second one yet); Fennesz, Ulrich Schnauss have all been getting heavy rotation on NHA's stereo for the last few months. Khonnor's probably the next buy after a friend played me the album.

They've been added to other artists who are less obviously of this style, such as Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed!

Any further recommendations of this sort of stuff welcomed. Though I must say the Editors' stuff sounds more Joy Division to me... (not a bad thing but not this kind of stuff either. is the album different?)

mike / meem if i see a flyer for that Nu gaze night down in hoxton next time i am cycling rapidly through i will post details up here. promise.

had not thought about the post-rock / shoe gaze similarity, though now it's been m,entioed i think i agree, and also that Caribou / Manitoba are totally brilliant, My Bloody Valentine + Brian wilson can't be a bad combination

my favourite Pale Saints tune is their first single(Thought of you? - i forget) but i totally love the brass band versions of a couple of the In Ribbons tunes that came out on the 4AD boxset. PLay that one loud and I am transported someplace wonderful, swathes of horns of every size.

related: have you all heard the "Blue Skied n Clear" compilation that Morr Music released a couple years back? It's all these electronic musicians doing covers of Slowdive songs on the first disc, and original tracks on the second disc. For fans of the old time shoegazing and for fans of current electronic stuff, this is a must. It's quite quite lovely. Solvent covering Slowdive is particularly amazing.

no, I havn't.

I am ready to draw a line in the sand and say that the first Brian Jonestown Massacre record is the greatest shoegazer record of all time. Methadrone.

Give me any other revival than the constant stream of quasi garagae rock / 70's flappy trousered heavy metal in punk attire. My monies on another 80's style Jazz / Boho thing...

MBV's 'Soon' is a thing of beauty, and you can dance to it... {behind your fringe, in a baggy jumper...}

Oh, and The Cocteau Twins almost reformed recently...

...before Liz Frazer changed her mind.

Out of interest, as someone's recommended them to me - what do people think about Weevil?

All I know of them so far is someone said I might like them if I like "this sort of stuff" and their remix on Phantom Phorce by the Super Furry Animals is excellent.

Anyone got any thoughts?

I second mr schnauss as part of an electronic shoegaze "revival" although his music is more than that, isnt it?

he also has a couple of tracks on "blue skied and clear"...

I heard awhile back ago that there was an old thread hiding somewhere about this...

I think Sonic Cathedral's lots of fun...I play records there pretty often. Last month in Oxford was nice, had a lovely time...despite wonky headphones that made for some confusion early in my set!

The DJ's are all quite good...you hear a lot of old favourites, but also newer things. Good if you like your music loud and beautiful and psychedelic!

My last set included a few classics like MBV's "Strawberry Wine" and "You Made Me Realise", but also quite a bit of Velvets (What Goes On...extra extended super feedback version), Suicide, The Pastels, Brian Jonestown Massacre (yes!!...played "That Girl Suicide" and "Hide and Seek"...two early gems from the Methodrone era), Brian Eno (Here Come the Warm Jets), nice Reload remix of Slowdive's "In Mind", Yo La Tengo (Kevin Shields' remix of "Autumn Sweater")...and lots more.

Sonic Cathedral is organised by the same nice guys who put on Rock and Roll Soul, and Health and Happiness (two excellent clubs by the way)...here's a bit on the next one...just pasted from their website:

Get ready to party like it’s 1991 to classic shoegazing sounds from the Velvets to the Valentines to Ulrich Schnauss as the SONIC CATHEDRAL opens its doors for worship on JOHN PEEL DAY, Thursday October 13. Appropriately, there’s a very rare live outing for JIM REID, former frontman of Peel favourites The Jesus And Mary Chain, plus one of the first UK appearances from Australia’s THE MORNING AFTER GIRLS. On the decks are THE TELESCOPES, who have promised some Peel treats, and some very special SURPRISE GUESTS.

Rothkoid, god damnit - I read all the way down this thread just to post that and you beat me to it.

I should add: When I saw the Morning After Girls open for the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the MAG played the best set I'd ever seen. Then Anton got up and tried to pick fights until I left.

In all fairness - the band's van had been stolen, and it was Anton's Birthday - also the anniversary of his father's suicide.

Still, though - the Morning After Girls felt like the band the BJM should have been all along.
