GLAM PUNK TAKEOVER

I don't know really what else to call it... a lot of it seems to come from Sweden...

Backyard Babies
Hellacopters
Gluecifer
Turbonegro
Hardcore Superstar
Electric Frankenstein
The Wildhearts
American Heartbreak

I know the Jugend might get offended by me calling TRBNGR Glam, but hey...it's a kind of broad term encapsulating a bunch of bands who combine the elements of drug-fuelled punk anthems with the technical wizardry of Cheap Trick... it's strange but I'm finding myself getting the truth of the meaning of the universe out of these bands.

Maybe I should get a Hat with a Feather in it...

Try out Iggy and the Stooges, and Bowie obviously if you haven't already.

Pink Grease are a good, recent addition to the genre as well.

i'd agree with turbonegro being called glam, but i think their defining thread is their horror element.
they kinda ooze scary sexual predator vibes, and a helthy dose of that misfits menace that isnt really, and thats what makes me giggle like a shoolgirl at their gigs.
that and the big fat naked man telling us all we have flaccid penises.
i'd kinda see them as the end result of some nice boys who took acid in a prison riot and listened to motorhead.
god knows how they managed it in real life.

At the risk of overpimping... Silver Ginger 5, 'Black Leather Mojo'. Fer christ's sake. Why doesn't everyone buy it already so I can stop mentioning it?

Bill Drummond said in "The Manual" that the Glam beat only works once every ten years- let's see, Doctorin' the Tardis, The Dope Show... yes, we're about due.

... yes, we're about due.

Well, schaffel (electrohouse / techno with a 12/8 Glitter rock beat) kind of came and went over the last three years but never really hit the mainstream. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the beat filter into a few pop tunes right about now.

Having just remembered that I'm pretty out of touch with what does / does not currently constitute 'the mainstream' (of popular music) I'm going to qualify that with an 'as far as I know'...'

Excellent and entirely glam that hasn't been covered in this thread: Marilyn Manson, Gackt, and the New York Dolls are supposed to be revived now or something.
And, y'know, the Angry Inch, 'cause a fictional and totally made-up glam band (made up mostly of members of a real band) make them that much more, er, glam. And punk.

And of course I didnt mention Supershit 666 who are like, a Supergroup of 3 of the bands on that list...Jack, "The Monkey Zoo" is one of the best songs I've heard in a loong time.

And yeah, "Open Up And Bleed" is one of my all time faves. It's just that when I listen to The Stooges nowadays I dunno...playing their songs onstage for so many years kinda numbed me to them.

Leather Nun,anyone? They were well ahead(and behind) of their time...

Rubber City Rebels are another group of hardy perennials, as are the Gaza Strippers (best name...ever),and the Peepshows (like the Hellacopters with shorter hair)

.maybe we could squeeze in the more 60s influenced flaming sideburns-purely for the fact that their singer is called speedo freakin' Martinez, and thus deserving of infinite respect

Personally, I have always loathed Hardcore Superstar. They suck ass.

On the glam front, Bobby Conn's always a good laugh, and his lyrics tend towards the absurdo-satirical ("The united nations/under the rule of satan") and thus veer away from the genre's tendency towards bad petry, further mangled by Swedish pronounciation (looking at you, Backyard Babies).

Ahem.

How the fuck did I forget Bobby Conn? BAD Stoat.

VK- if you ever get a chance to see Pink Grease live, they're lots of fun. The keyboards guy especially. Proper sleazy glam.
