I might be dead.

Or crippled.

Or worse....I might want to run another one!

Well as it turned out, the marathon was Sunday just gone and I did it in a respectable 4 hrs 24. Rather pleased with myself and can definately say I'll be doing another, perhaps even aiming for sub-4 hours!

Interesting news item on the radio this morning online here - regular exercise such as running helps prevent Alzheimers...

Thanks Loomis...it was a great experience on the day and I recommend it to anyone. Just a small matter of putting in the training.....

just bumping an older thread in case the new year has gotten anyone out in the cold running. i've been at it a copu[le of years now but have just discovered running up hills, its like a whole new kind of endorphin high. started with a few minutes up slopes and just worked up over a month. it has really reinvigorated my interest in running, tho it helps that i am a 10 miutes climb from quite amazing yorkshire upland scenery.

anyone else got into running up slopes and got any tips for a newbie?

A great website for planning runs is Mapmyrun.com, you can calculate the distance and print out maps, it's really useful.

I'm in the ballot for the Edinburgh marathon this year. Frankly I'm going to be a little scared if I do get in. I've run the Cardiff Half, the Bath Half and the Great South Run, but the prospect of taking on the full thing is quite daunting.

Still, my training's going well. I'm currently running about 15 miles a week, but I'm going to try and get that up to 30-35 in the weeks before (assuming I get in).

good luck with the ballot. 15 miles a week sounds a lot, i think i do 6, 3 on a slope, and it kills me, i ache most of the week until my next one.

but then i am nearly 40.

keep us posted here on the marathon please.

It's strange with the ballot, if I don't get in I probably will be secretly pleased, because if I do, I'm going to have to abandon my relatively hedonistic hazy lifestyle and adopt an ascetic monk-like demeanour for a while.

Maybe that's a good thing. I will miss the fags though.

Well, I got in (I'm running for Kidney Research UK). If anyone here knows much about running, I'd like their input on my training plan;

Currently I run 3.6 miles twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) which I do in about 25-30 minutes, and a long 10-14 mile run on the weekend, which I usually take pretty easy and do in about 2 hours. I did a 10 mile race on Sunday, and was pretty happy with my time of 1:18, but there's no way I'm going to keep that pace up for 26.2 miles...

Currently the plan is to gradually up those 3.6 mile runs to 6 mile runs over the next few months, and try to get my maximum distance up to about 20-23 miles before the race.

Does this sound like a good plan?

Here's my begging bowl incidentally... every little helps!

Is this "Running" on Xbox or PS3? I've looked at the store and I can't find it.

nah 'running' is strictly old school, you need an atari emulator.

as for a training plan, i can be of no help at all, having prgressed very little.
biggest barrier for me is the sheer boredom and lack of motivation to up my distance and pace, i was running 2 years and never got past 6 miles, then suddenly i move to the country and find myself running for an hour over the pennines thinking 'i wonder if i can get over that hill into the next valley?' and whoosh, instant motivation.
