Legends of the Dark Knight 193. Fuck. Where to begin? The art was amazing. It's like the artist is doing this weird Steve Ditko thing and somehow retaining a really modern almost run of the mill look at the same time. Hard to describe, it's creepy and pretty at the same time.

But the art takes a backseat to the story this time around. Just when you think you've seen every Batman imaginable over the years, the writer of this story just lets you get a glimpse of Batman you never really thought about, and the genius behind it, is you should have thought about it. It was there all along. And with a few simple words the writer reveals this to you.

Top notch issue, and maybe one of the better Dark Knight stories to come out.

I'm enjoying this a great deal. Non-canon characterizations are really working in tandem with Fisher's gorgeous, silly lines. I love his clouds, I loved that panel of steam shooting out of Gordon's ears in issue 1. That outfit Mr. Freeze's wife is wearing in the dream sequence. Sublime.

It's a Batman comic and I'm eager to see what happens next, which is, in itself, extraordinary these days.

To my mind this is Fisher's spotlight, though, I adore his work here, and it's showing that he's much evolved from his work on the Tokyo Pop mini from awhile back, which was a hell of a lot of visual fun in its own right.

Ahh, I see it's getting rave reviews. I'll see if I can track down the singles, because I'm not quite sure DC is trading anything from the LOTDK series...

I don't know...other than the art, I'm not caring for this much. This issue was Batman gathering up a misfit crew of people and not much else goes on. We just got done with a Mr. Freeze story (and all of them are pretty much the same now), and this is echoing the plot of the previous story arc too much for me.

That's been the problem with Legends for a LONG time, either a good astist working on a bland story or a good story saddled with an inadequate artist.

hey there mister moonlight
duely noted. did not mean to offend. us artist types think we are the center of the universe at times. however, i do read these boards all of the time. its just that i rarely comment. i tend to just haunt and see what people are thinking about stuff. also i have been invited by other lithers to freely post about projects so i thought it would be cool. as a matter of fact i had been meaning to start a thread about the FLIGHT anthologies volumes 1 and 2 but haven't had a chance to get thoughts together other than i think they were great.

i agree with everyone's feelings about seth's art on this. it is truly inspired. as far the story goes we kinda wanted to be tradional with it since we knew we would be working with him. his style of drawing alone would be enough to inject an unusual perspective. unfortunately they scheduled this story right after another freeze story. i'm not quite sure why. so it is impossible to not draw comparisons. oh well. hopefully by the end you will all be somewhat satisfied with what we did.

I haven't read a Batman comic in years but this was just fantabulous! This is the Batman I've always liked better, obsessive and very human.

Just got the final issue of this arc today, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Little nuances, the way the physical confrontations are so short and slightly awkward, the parts of Batman's personality that are not fully at the fore and reveal themselves as awkward are wonderful (love the way he criticizes human personalities as 'arbitrary').

Played very straight, but still wonderfully unconventional, filled with really satisfying, subtle anticlimax.

I hope this arc sells well and they get the team back on for another at some stage. I was very pleased with it.

Spoilers, obviously.

Batman on bat-skis.

I ache for the team that he assembles; they remind me of the Shadow's network of assistants and you can tell right away how much work he's done in selecting his candidates because in the end, even Amy doesn't really shy away from their perceived responsibility. They're just people, they don't have fun serrated capes, but they good out of their way to help a teammate and try to solve the crime.

I like that they realize they've been let go of but still provide Batman with some aid while they do it on their own.

Fisher's art is superb, and it's rather interesting to watch him draw the more grotesque things - they blend so well into the flexible, elastic world he builds but still stand out as being horrible. Good use of sound effects.

Wonder if we'll ever see more of these characters. Probably not, I like them as a self-contained story set, but the scripting did a lot to make me like them and want to follow on with them afterward.

So, Seth Fisher's done Green Lantern (Willworld), Batman (Snow), Flash (Time Flies) -- who's next? His Hawkman would be ridiculous, I think, and Plastic Man's too -obvious-.

Actually, I think he'd be a brilliant for a Martian Manhunter mini.

Know what was particularly good about this (and I've never bought a Fisher comic before but I imagine it may be his doing)?

The sound-effects. They're both ridiculous and apt. Great stuff. From #196: PTHON!KRA and ZAPAN! were two faves.

That's totally uncalled for, not to mention rude. How often to artists and writers post on message boards and converse directly with us? Not very often. Why? Maybe because of wankers like "prev."

Oh, gosh! They converse with us! They converse with us little people! They are goood enough to tell us to discuss their books!

I've just come.

Really, furioso. There are plenty of boads where comic book professionals post frequently. You might want to try Byrne Robotics, Millarworld or whatever the Warren Ellis Forum is called these days. However, this is Barbelith, and, while having a comic book professional tell us more about their industry or their work is often very interesting, this thread was spam. Phex called it, Mr. Williams admitted it, and everything was resolved happpily. For you to jump in now in the hope that maybe you'll be invited to the magic comic book creator treehouse for lemonade for such heroic acts of def(er)ence is frankly embarrassing.

That's code for Garth Ennis peeing on someone while Mark Millar giggles in the background.

Actually Lady, I'm ROB LEIFELD's wife and I am one coked up, ill-tempered, bizarrely muscled, squinty megabitch so don't youse ever f*ck wit' me, see?

I think, covers-wise, I like #195 - Part 4 - best. The close-up of Batman in profile, frosted over (but not frozen solid) with Freeze a little ways in the distance is brilliant. The look of grim determination on the Bat-face is so oddly comical. All the little icicles growing off the cowl.

And the opening of that chapter, with Batman debriefing Mira seperately from the others, while she washes the dishes. I liked the implication that as she's expected to stay behind and think tactically and analytically, she ends up being the Alfred, cleaning to busy herself and keep out the bad thoughts about what's happening with others. She knows the symptoms to watch for, she knows the warning signs. I actually just like the domesticity it suggests about how the team is living, it's a good detail to subverts Batman's usual role (when he meets with Gordon he has Gordon's FULL ATTENTION and there's always some sort of MAJOR DANGER SITUATION going on) and seems interesting in relation to what happens to her in the final chapter.

Amy's the Margo. I love her random hats and odd dresses.

It just seems you might be happier there, furioso.

You jumped in with both boots on prior to any discussion anyway.

Three months after the thread was started. Have a look at the dates. The major argument against people turning up and pimping their work is that it doesn't make for good discussion. So far, you have said nothing of interest about Legends of the Dark Knight 193, only about your desire to join its creator in the Wendy house for afternoon tea, which rather supports this argument. I suggest you rectify that by talking about the comic, which presumably you have read as you feel confident in describing it as "good work", rather than calling other members of Barbelith wankers on what must be seen as rather skimpy evidence.

furioso, dude, there’s a whole Policy forum on barbelith, so we don’t have to have this kind of discussion in the middle of threads about batman. Your thoughts on this stuff will be most welcome there. If you’re unhappy about this particular case, start a new thread. But jhw’s posting habits - and your bezzy mate routine, as it happens - have previously drawn comment here and here, and there’s an existing thread about spam, what constitutes spam, how to respond to spam etc, here.

Just trying to help, man.

1 - Did not know there was a complaint thread: thanks for the heads up Bedhead.

2 - I'm sorry I called you a wanker haus, but not too sorry. "Good work" means Promethea and Chase.

3 - As for the book, err, the art does look very nice.

Dude, you didn't call me a wanker. You called Prev a wanker. You may well have thought I was a wanker, but that's not something we object to around here. Some days, it's mandatory.
