Right I've just started downloading this and it's fucking fantastic, why is no-one talking about it? The first few songs have startled me with their invention, their ambition, their sense of fun. I've laughed - alot - I've got close to shedding a tear (I'm a man you understand - I only ever get close) and I'm overwhelemed by a desire to buy this album immediately.

Not a lot of music does that to me.

Those who know more about this brilliant band need to fill me in, and explain why you haven't done so already.

Selfish pricks.

Thanks Boboss! I've been meaning to start a thread on Sufjan Stevens for ages. Was amazed there wasn't one already. It is a brilliant album, I rushed out and bought it on the day it came out after having fallen in love with Sufjan Stevens last year. Not so much a band as he actually plays most of the instruments himself, he's credited for about 20 of them on Illinois.

Illinois is the second release from his 50 states project. Last year he released Michigan, which is a homage to the state in which he grew up, and he then announced he was going to record an album for every state in the Union. Michigan, like Illinois is a brilliant blend of folky quieter numbers sandwiched between, rousing percussion-heavy Rogers and Hammerstein-esque tracks in interesting time signitures. The variety of styles he encompasses, and the creativity is overwhelming.

It's also really worth checking out his other release from last year Seven Swans, which was made up of tracks which didn't really fit onto Michigan apparently. The whole album is full of beautiful and more delicate tracks laced with loads of biblical and spiritual references.

I can't sell him enough really....am a complete convert.

I'd be interested though on opinions from 'lithers in Illinois on the album though. His idea is to capture the feel of each state by writing about it's landmarks, history etc. He obviously grew up in Michigan so it was an album which drew on personal experiences, but for Illinois he's obviously gone away and done a lot of research. Do you feel he's done your state justice and represented it well?

Just got back from town - the album's in the CD player.

Thanks for the low down, Psi. So he's planning on an album per state? The Dave Simm of music (without the hateful misogyny)?
If his other albums are half as good as this I'm going to be a very happy camper.

Oh, and, Benny, completely agree on Come on! Feel the Illinois!, it's absolutely brill.

They are, although Illinoise sounds a lot more upbeat than the other two I've heard. Michigan and Seven Swans are fucking extraordinary records though, especially Seven Swans. I just got myself a copy of Illinoise last night so havent really got to grips with it yet, sounds great though. Love the insanely dramatic opening track. Has any heard his previous two albums, before Michigan? I thought Seven Swans was his second record but it's actually his fourth...

Browsed this thread at the weekend and I downloaded some yesterday- its bloody great.

Its on my must purchase list- i should wait till payday- but its sounding very very good, so i may just blow the cash and live on baked beans till payday..

Thanks for the tip-off, its always good when you find something new especially with what looks and sounds like a great history.

I'll write more later but for those of you that haven't checked him out yet- imagine a more chilled out folky sounding flaming lips with gorgeous choirs, banjos, trumpets etc - this could be the soundtrack to the rest of my summer.

Man, this guy must have one hell of a press agent, 'cause it seems that he's on just about every web site and in every magazine that I've run across in the past couple of weeks. I'm not trying to imply that his record ain't worth the hype, but I haven't seen this kind of sudden exposure since MIA.

Bought it and loving it, but i'm living on beans for the next week or so... I've been listening to it all morining in my office, already 3 people have asked me what i'm listening to cos its really nice- this album could go huge! M could it be that we're all raving about this record cos its very good, rather than a PR job?

I noticed that DC have requested that Superman is taken off the cover on the next pressing of the album.

Boo! But hang on to that original copy, its just become 'teh collectors item....'

Loving what i'm hearing. Gonna give it a week or so (i guess till i'm paid) then the other albums need to be purchased.

I also love the 50 states idea- judging by the fact that he seems to be knocking out about an album a year this could be a project that takes 50 years! In my book that's an impressive undertaking, do we think he'll manage? I kind alove the idea of an old Stevens writing his Florida LP in his retirement home. Genius.

It's worth living on beans for a week though isn't it!

How fucking good!

Just starting to get to grips with it now, had it for a couple of weeks but there is so much there, and so much depth to it, that it takes a bit of time to sink in. If anything, it suffers from there being too many stunning songs to cope with on one record...

Just starting to get to grips with it now

I know what you mean, each song is so rich, plus many have such a strong narrative to them, it feels almost impossible to absorb all of the stories on the album at once.

In answer to your question about the other albums GL, I've got A Sun Came! which is his earliest album, and whilst it is still really good it has yet to shine quite as much as the later ones, there's a sense of him trying to work out his sound on it...and is therefore more of a mixed bag. I think he has a more clearly defined sound on the later albums, but this one is quite playful, with little bits of kid's conversations interspersed between the songs and is worth it alone for a few of the standout tracks, one of which, for me, is Super Sexy Woman which has a distinctly comic book superheroine flavour, and a few others which blend a very medieval sound with a more eastern, sitar laden sound.

I don't have his other album which apparently is a 'folktronia' record with a track for each house in the Chinese Zodiac, I get the feeling its very different to all the others.

Just encountered this through copious airplay on local community radio station breakfast show. holy fuck what a prodigious thing. am assembling mp3s into a playlist to get the sweep of the whole thing, but will buy as soon as cash arrives in my last, inshallah.

yeah, just wanted to chime in and say wow. the song titles all long and freaky like that are great in that sort of faux-ringmaster McSweeneys way. I'm in love with the Man of Steel song - sucker as I am for all that big fat arranging and choral work and stuff.

Wonder if SS is familiar with John Linnell (of They Might Be Giants) and his State Songs album? Only 26 songs recorded out of a possible 50, and no sign of the remaining 24 so far, and that was just one SONG per state. How old will this prodigy be when he gets this project finished?

i may have something to add to this in a little while - currently interviewing Sufjan for Plan B (www.planbmag.com) though it's three days to deadline and i haven't had his answers yet...

i heard someone who's a friend of a friend of his say he's now publically acknowledged he may never complete the set, and even hint affiliated people may get involved, but we'll see.

and re: the narratives and outlandish cioncepts, his (non-musical) background was in writing fiction.

oh, and anyone who hasn't seen the 50 States website ...shd (only Michegan up so far, though). cross-referencing the notes on the various places against the song lyrics gives a really good insight into understanding them better.

still no answer. i grow anxious (but i've started writing the article without him, so nyah).

yup a great start but slightly disappointing that they haven't managed to get illinois up yet - especially given the press that it has recieved. There is always the possibility that he has taken on rather too much- i know he likes to maintain full artistic contol- designing artwork/ shooting his own videos- so maybe with the extra workload garnered through success he just hasn't had time to work on the website- as i assume he also puts that together.

Does anyone know whether he tours/ plays live? I assumed he either doesn't or has kept this to a minimal amount of shows as it would distract from his rather intense recording schedule- as well as being difficult and expensive to reproduce. I can't imagine anything more disappointing than seeing a glorious album replacing subtle strings/ horns with 2 keyboards and rock guitar reworkings as mercury rev do/ did.

.... and just before posting i just checked his website and answered my own question he is currently touring in the states with an orchestra style affair the illinoismakers- although it seems nothing is booked for blighty... yet! maybe if you ever get an interview you can ask him over please auto pilot?

he played the UK last year, in support of Seven Swans - i'm sure he'll be back, though perhaps in a more low-key, accoustic manner. and the interview has been okayed and he relayed happiness re:the questions etc through his PR - just waiting for pesky answers.

I've got tickets to go and see him in London at the Shepherd's Bush Empire on 17th October...booked last week and there weren't that many left then, so might be sold out now...might be worth checking around all the different ticket agencies.

Very excited to see how he is live, and whether like you say autopilot he'll keep it low-key and acoustic or try and re-create the richness of some of his tracks on stage.

i think it will largely depend on whether or not they can stretch to plane tix for the whole extended ensemble he needs to play the records... 'Seven Swans' was easy to do as (more or less) a solo artist - 'Illinoise' wd take some re-imagining...

i had a ticket for him on that last tour but didn't make it. the friend i gave the ticket to said he was a really engaging raconteur between songs, pointing at the various places on a map and telling childhood stories etc (hmm - which suggests he played stuff from 'Michegan' with reduced personnel too...)

tickets are only £13.50 which with only one date indicates it probably will be stripped down. even so i'm jealous guys, jealous....

thinking more on this- why didn't anyone book him for a festival- surely this is perfect festival music?

New Sufjan Stevans album 'The Avalanche' on its way!

Apparently it contains extra tracks/ alternate takes from Illinois sessions- due to be released in July. It has 21 tracks, including an acoustic version of my favourite 'Chicago'. Just enough to tide you over till the next of the 50 states LP, good news eh?

So The Avalanche is out and its sounding pretty good... more on this record later when i've got my head around it- there's suddenly been an influx of new records i've ben buying and i want to give this one a good listen before i comment.

Sooooo the other news is that Sufjan is touring the UK in November- playing the Barbican November 3rd- i can't find tickets online anywhere yet- so i'd imagine they'll go on sale pretty soon- Boboss d'ya fancy it PM me if you do cos i'm definitely getting tickets...

The Avalanche is nowhere as good as Illinois (naturally, this is an outtakes album and Illinois was my favourite album of 2006 tied only with I Am A Bird Now). I do love a couple of songs of it though, particularily "The Henney Buggey Band" which I am already calling the song of the year. It should have been on Illinois, really. Unlike other songs, which, while fantastic, I can see why Sufjan Stevens took out because other songs fill the same purpose only better, and also because some songs, or some parts of the songs, do sound alike.

Still, this album made my summer. I love Sufjan.

I have a couple of tickets for Sufjan at the barbican that I want to sell. They seem to be like gold dust at the moment, currently going for £80 a pair on ebay. I'm going to put them up on ebay and make a bit of cash, but thought I'd see if anyone here wanted to buy them off me first. Make me a decent hassle-free offer, and they are yours.
