Bumping this thread - as I still need a flatmate. See above.

Come and live in my House of Voodoo! Curses! Zombies! Live Snakes!

Not really... Maybe a bit.

Live cursing! Zombie snakes! If I was in London I'd move tomorrow, when the inevitable zombie holocaust comes this is the safest house to be in!

More seriously, I'll ask a couple of people in London for you dude.

I need a place to live but definitely can't afford £450. I'm working on it, if my pay doesn't go up I'll have to change jobs.

OK, time for another plea:

There's a room going in my house from mid-November. It's small and unfurnished (but with optional single bed included). It also has one unusual feature, namely the boiler. It's quite safe (and handy for popping the heating on in the winter) but obviously perhaps not to everyone's agreement. But you can't say I tried to hide this fact...

The house is in Greenwich, SE10. 5 mins walk to Maze Hill overground station and 5 mins bus ride to North Greenwich tube. There are three of us in the house already. One is a smoker. Generally a relaxed and laid-back household. Mod cons include: Wi-Fi, washing machine, freeview. Rent is £360 PCM, including bills. Deposit £250, minimum contract 6 months.

As ever, PM if you or anyone you know might be interested...

What, in London? Nice one.

how many people live together in a London flat on average? Is it unheard of for just one person or a couple? My pals who moved to London tell me they have had some odd reaction when people find out it's just the two (a couple) of them in a two bedroom.

It really does depend. I would suspect that not a lot of the people here could afford to live either alone or as a couple in London, but there are a few who do.

I guess it's just that for people who are on low-ish incomes, living with people/friends financially just makes more sense. And means that you can afford to have a roof over your head AND go out and be funky!

I'm living in a two-bedroom (or one bedroom and lounge, depending how you want to count it) flat with just me and the dog. And yeah, it's the best part of seven hundred quid a month (and it's a rubbish flat, too). Not cheap.

Gotcha. I think the lounge is always sort of built into American concepts of apartments unless it is a studio.

We've got a crooked crappy small-ish* 1 bedroom shack for the same in US dollars.
Two bedrooms are around 1200. The 'Mouth is teh fashionable at boston prices.

*my NYC friends are the only people who think the Shack is roomy.

Wow. Living in Sherbrooke, Quebec is hella cheap. I knew my mortgage was low compared to rents in Toronto, but this is staggering.

*bump*

Anyone know of any spare rooms around north/east/west london? I'm working in Farringdon so anywhere in zone 2 would be good. If anyone knows of anywhere for around 400pm gimme a shout.

I used to think it would be a drawback to have roommates--I've never had one--but if making a move to the UK, I embrace it. Not just from a financial standpoint, but as to have people to help acclimate.

The only thing they'd have to withstand is me bringing a pair of cats.

Ah. Having felt the pain of an ex as he flatsearched for cat-friendly homes, that might not be too easy ... not to mention the six-month quarantine period on arrival.

Sorry. Anyway! Passing on from Turns update:

My sis has a room available in Camberwell in a lovely Victorian house with decked garden, three beds, one bath, living room, dining room (!) and nice kitchen for £450pcm. PM me if interested. Available immediately/two weeks ago. One cat called Frank in residence. He is unfriendly to feline competition so you have to like cats but not have one.

Why am I spending so much time looking at flats on Craigslist?

Oh, I applied for a visa. That's why.

Found some nice ones, too.

My sister lives in Camberwell and I pretended to live there once whilst waiting for an operation to sew up my finger. (Pretending to live there is not the same as staying there with my sister and her hubby. Pretending to live there involves living there on my own whilst they were away.)

It was a really great place to live. I would recommend it.

Found the thread!

The below is available again, with the difference that you would be living with two girls (one of them me) and a boy.
Dates to view are April 15, 16 and 18.

"My friend is looking for a lovely new flatmate to move in with her and two boys for their spacious and sociable 4-bedroom flatshare in Kilburn. There is a comfortable, sunny room available from early June in Callcott Road, London NW6. Rent is £473.77 pcm (bills included), which really is an absolute bargain.

The flat is on the fourth floor of an attractive Victorian Mansion block - with great views - a stone's throw away from the Kilburn High Road (but far enough away for it to be nice and quiet!).

There are some great shops and pubs nearby and the popular Tricycle Theatre and cinema is literally at the end of their road. West Hampstead, Maida Vale and Hampstead are also nearby. Kilburn also has really good transport links:
the Jubilee line, Bakerloo line, Silverlink and numerous buses running directly into central London.

If you are interested, or know anyone else who might be, please PM me and I will put you in touch."
