Righty ho. First things first.

WHO THE FUCK IS SHANE OAKLEY? I mean, I think I remember his name from Deadline years ago, but what were they thinking giving him an assignment like this? A beautifully iconic cover from Gibbons promised visual treats, but this? Incomprehensible messy artwork that totally scuppered any chance of this being a good read. Everyone looked the same, proportion and detail out the fucking window.... Cheezus.

The story itself wasn't that much better. It all seemed a bit familair, you know? the mysterious (but very helpful) girl. The Arkham style institution. The 'big plan'... And without flogging a dead horse too much Mozzer's 'Zenith Phase III' was a far wittier and darker re-imagining of British characters.
Also: If you're not allowed to use big scary swear-words then come up with another solution. Please don't use f&£$??@ing stupid B$££"!£$$ symbols. It's shit. Nngh

So basically, I was dissappointed. I mean I didn't have particularly high hopes for it, but really. If this is the best Team Moore could manage, I'm surprised.

This is out? Must've missed it yesterday - unfamiliar comic shop and all that.

So, should I bother buying it, for curiosity's sake, like? It sounds pretty shit, which is unfortunate, but not entirely surprising.

Barbelith is back?!?!? yaaaaay! Welcome back barbelith.

Albion got mostly disappointing reviews across the board - and the fact that Moore didn't script it is a huge turn-off for me. Also, I imagine that if I knew and liked these old characters I might care more about this series.

Yeah, I think my initial enthusiasm for this project was based primarily on nostalgia, Zenith, and the hope that Leah Moore would be the equal of her father.

Silly me.

So, is Albion's ass being kicked by Jack Staff? The samizdat versions of old UK comic characters beating the official versions...

Ah, Jack Staff. We'll always have Jack Staff.

Hang on, so what is Moore's involvement with this, because I'm fairly sure I remember the advert saying he was involved. Or is this one of those scams where Moore once muttered something and a bunch of completely different people have turned it into a comic?

Plotted by Moore, apparently.

Seriously folks - grab a hold of the Everything used to be black and white Jack staff trade to seehow much fun can be had with the characters featured in Albion... as well as an unexpected elseworlds conclusion to an old marvel comic story...

The original topic starter is a little harsh, I think, but he's not far off. The whole "why did these superheroes mysteriously dissappear some years ago" idea has been done several times now and so far (in issue 1 at least) this doesn't add anything.

The script isn't terrible or anything, but I can't help feeling slightly conned by it being written by Alan Moore's daughter. I mean she is a nice gal and all, but if she wasn't Alan's daughter would she have got this assignment or such an early break into comics at this level? No, would be my answer. (NB I'm not knocking ehr for taking advantage or her biological good luck, or saying the script is bad - it isn't) but this I guess is kinda Alan Moore Lite.

I was expecting a let-down after reading you lot grouse, but was very pleasantly surprised. I'm intrigued by the characters, who I have no familiarity with, as with the story, and the relationship between the guy and the groovy oddball girl.

And while Leah Moore must have benefited as a fledgling writer by being Alan's daughter, her short tale in Tom Strong's Terrific Tales is rock solid, and her work with husband John Reppion on WILD GIRL is very strong. The team displays an interesting "non-spoonfed" approach to story in the series, and it definitely had an original vibe all its own. Alas, there probably will not be a trade, so check out the issues if you're intriguied.

Two Thumbs up for ALBION, then you miserable bastids!

PS: now I am finally going to check out Jack Staff after many a fondle at my local comic emporium...

I don't think many people are saying this is a bad comic, it isn't - it's just not a particularly exciting one either. It is also a comic that has an amount of expectational baggage.

Firstly, it is being sold as an Alan Moore project. In a very real sense it isn't, and while such a tactic might get people to check out the title once, it is also likely to alienate and disappoint them once they discover that Leah Moore and John Rep. are not Alan Moore.

Secondly, the characters in Albion have been revisited at least 3 times, possibly more, over the years, with varying degrees of officiality and success. You really have to do something very different and quite spectacular to make Albion distinctive from the previous comics that have covered the same ground - particularly Zenith and Jack Staff.

But, yeah, Albion was probably always going to be a bit of a hard sell, harder still for relatively new writers attempting to step out of the massive shadow of their relatives...

I'd say that the IPC heroes have been done three times in recent memory - Zenith Phase 3, Jack Staff and I think a bit in Ian Edginton's somewhat ill-fated The Establishment...

Personally, I quite liked Albion. I though the art was patchy - there's one frame in particular when they are running where Penny appears to be levitating, but in other places it's effective - like the red flash appearing in silhouette. Too much time spent in the prisons, which seemed strangely obvious. However, not one but two Bowie references, on the plus side.

As a reasonably fun comic, I think it's OK, but if I were heavily invested in reading new Alan Moore stuff I'd probably be disappointed. This "plot by" stuff reminds me too much of the Arthurt C Clarke/Gentry Lee school of ghostwriting - capitalising on a geek-compelling name to fuel sales of a product that may not actually have much to do with him - is this "plot" a page-by-page breakdown, a list of what happens in each issue, a paragraph outlining the entire thing? It's all a bit Marc Kostabi...

I flipped thru the preview on mile high and was intrigued by the art on the B&W page with the rubber-limbed escape artist dude being captured by the government agent guy, but it looked very much like a 'we captured them all because they were potential subversives' thing.

Did they HAVE to be missing? Couldn't you reimagine them another way that didn't reflect their actual absence from the shelves...

"You really have to do something very different and quite spectacular to make Albion distinctive from the previous comics that have covered the same ground - particularly Zenith and Jack Staff."

Not having read either Z3 or JS yet, this seems "new" to me.

What's the sitch on Zenith, anyway? I know there is some kind of rights confusion, but if this started off in 2000AD, how can such a situation exist? Don't they do work-for-hire? And is it true that Titan pulped a recent new printing?

One of the most interesting bit of Albion for me was the pages done in the style of old British IPC comics, but, well, it wasn't that interesting and we have seen Moore senior pull much the same trick before, most notably in Watchmen...

was wondering if this contains any characters from Warlord of Fireball comics, as they were IPC too if i rememebr rightly. Is Union Jack Jackson in on this?
think i'll get it regardless for the rush of nostalgia if nothing else

You're not kidding. They've updated it since I last checked it out; every time, it makes me want to read Zenith again.

Anybody doing Kid Chameleon, wild denizen of the colour section? Ah, for the days when being raised by small lizards would give you the power to change colours defensively (no doubt useful in some parts of town...).

Great annotations Mr. Fish. I don't have a great depth of knowledge of the IPC characters, perhaps that's why I find this not a bad read. I wasn't particularly expecting it to knock my socks off. After poking around the Image web site and listening to you chaps, I think I'll be checking out Jack Staff pretty quick.
