Teh wow!

The girlfriend and I have been working at it for the last few months, and last Tuesday we confirmed that we're parents-to-be.

It's still early days, she's only six weeks in, and there's still alot of time for things to go wrong, that said, the last week has been exciting as hell, and, unsurprisingly, a little scary. Celebrating is odd when you have misscarriages and whatnot to worry about, but it's been difficult to contain ourselves.

So then, Barbeparents, any tips on how to survive the coming months: How do we stay calm, What should we be preparing for, etc...?

I've bought a couple of books geared towards the male experience of pregnancy. Luckily they don't appear to be the kind of gendered nonsense I was expecting, but I'd like to hear what some 'lithers have to say.

Cheers!

WOOOT!

Congratulations! I'm currently 8 months preggers so I'd be happy to help with any pregnancy questions.

6 weeks certainly is early days, I personally found the first three months of pregnancy a quite emotionally vulnerable time so give Ms Boboss lots of cuddles! First three months for me were full of excessive tiredness, a bit of morning sickness, complete lack of concentration, chronic forgetfulness, worrying about miscarriage and giving up fags- it's a pretty stressful time. At least when you're heavily pregnant people can't miss it and make an extra effort to help you out.

Staying calm? Still not worked that one out yet! Thankfully pregnancy hormones mellow you out a bit, but that's not much use to you I'm afraid.

Bookwise, it really depends on your approach to pregnancy and birth. My partner and I both found Shelia Kitzinger's pregnancy book useful, but she's not for everyone.

Congrats! You're in for the time of your life.

Best advice I can give is to not get too caught up in the books. They're a great resource, but I found myself getting a little too caught up in the "what if such-n-such goes wrong" sections. Don't freak yourself out. Remember to laugh, enjoy your waning "just the two of us" days, and GET HER WHATEVER SHE NEEDS/WANTS.

If there's one thing this world needs, it's more Barbe-Younglings.

Oh, and get yer camera ready to take snaps for the ever-impending "Barbe-babies[Pics]" thread.

Thanks, NG.

My SO's not suffering from much in the way of morning sickness at the mo' - just a little low level nausea from time to time. Any idea whether it'll get any worse? Does it tend to start as it means to go on?

Hear, hear. It's easy to get freaked out about stuff, but always try to bear in mind most women have straight-forward pregnancies and births, the overwhelming likelyhood being that your partner will be amongst them.

Put a knowing smile on my face, that did. I think we're both really feeling that time is running out for the old team. It's kind of sad, but I sooo want this kid, and I sooo want it with her.

The emotions, worries and little joys that pregnancy throws up have really surprised me.

As for hugs, she's getting loads.

Well, my morning sickness was basically just loads of persistent nausea it would get more intense in certain situations. The nausea did increase a bit after 6 weeks because your hormones go apeshit up until 12 weeks and then they level out a bit, this is when most women stop feeling sick. I found that if it started to get worse it was best just to go eat some plain carbohydrate like pasta or toast with nothing on it and then go lie down until I felt a bit better.

It can be a bit of a bugger but on the plus side, women who experience morning sickness are apparently less likely to miscarry 'cos the sickness is caused by healthy amounts of the pregnancy hormone HCG.

I'm suddenly glad she's feeling a bit sick.

Jub and Mordant, thanks guys.

6 weeks? Too early to rule out twins then.

Congratulations Boboss and SO!

Can't really offer much advice - 18 months of parenthood has blasted my past life out of my recollection.

Thankfully the fact that I'm an identical twin shouldn't effect our chances of twinnage, but my SO's age could be a factor. Apparently women over 35 are more likely to conceive fraternal twins than younger women.

Yes. Past life -- I had one, didn't I?

I'm no use with the pregnancy part, but when it comes nursery time, I can hem and haw and point and grunt and compare paint colors and furniture schemes with the best of them.

Oh, and I just recommended one o' these to Sax last week.
You can get 'em cheaper in the "gently used" mode over here.
Or you can just make one out of an old sarong -- slightly less comfortable, but more economical & just as efficient. The pretty young ladies always admire my sarong one.

Not this.

But this!

Cheers, Benny.

Name talks? Yep we've 'ad 'em. Lots of them. In fact they've been ongoing for months.

We've pretty much settled on Iris if it's a girl, but we're having problems with boy names. Arlo and Finn are the current front runners but we're by no means set of them.

Any suggestions? I like suggestions.

Realistically, by the time the child has reach maturity*, a combination of extreme climate change and the odd nuclear skirmish will have turned the world into a post-apocalyptic dystopia, so it's going to need a name like WARPIG.

*Defined as when it slays its first mutate cockroach, so about 11 or 12.
