was wondering if there are other fans here, or if anyone else has rethought their love of the band recently?

i remember them from 1981, ace of spades / bomber era. they were big with punks and metallers and i thought they were fantastic, but saw them recently and sort of re-positioned them sonically from the hard end of rock / metal to some holy place where they fit right alongside the ramones, stooges and the MC5, about the only UK band who can do that really in terms of maximum rock and roll

saying that the highlight of the set at hammersmith last week was definitiely when the bomber lighting rig came down in full metal light assault.

if only lemmy wasn't a nazi memorabilia collector they might get the kudos they are due

What bugs me about the greatness of Lemmy (and his music), is that too many people - for all the time he's been around - have no idea who he is or barely remember the songs. Fuck. He's memorable fellow, certainly, and y'know 'Ace of Spades' to that Probot thing there's a distinctive sound, so what is it?
Does truly hard, loud music - with witty/odd lyrics - just turn people off in droves? Or is it, maybe, just the States and Canada? I know there are people who only like the 'soft' Pixies songs, can't stand Monster Magnet or Guitar Wolf, and I'm probably the only person who thought Lolita Storm or Jack Off Jill entertaining (for about six minutes at a time), but I don't want to believe we live in a world where what was light five years ago, is now considered heavy, where what was emo five years ago is now punk, where weak is now [cue air guitar] RAWK [excellent sustained air guitar solo followed by collapse], or as close to as people are going to stand for.
'Killed by Death' for Crom's sake!
I do believe in ten years there'll be people who find Chicks on Speed and REM too loud/fast/intense/hard.

It's funny, I was in HMV recently (for my sins) and I noticed that Blink 182 were in the metal/nu metal/punk section and Motorhead were in the rock/pop section. I'm not sure if there is any great meaning in this except to suggest that to the staff of HMV Motorhead must be the band that inspired all those recent fashion t-shirts and not much else...

As for the band themselves, love 'em and been going to their gigs for nearly twenty years. I do wish they had avoided their collaborations with Girlschool tho'.

Motorhead are coming to my town in November, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it!

Not sure about this whole "they ain't gettin their dues!" trip you guys seem to be on though - last time I checked Motorhead were doing sell-out tours of huge venues and were unquestioningly adored by absolutely everybody in the world of 'rock' whose opinion is worth a damn.

I mean, they're not exactly the kind of band that formed with intention of topping the charts, y'know? (Except of course that they DID, purely by accident and general awesomeness... which makes them even better!) In their own field of supremely heavy-ass rock though, they're pretty much top of the pile in terms of popularity / legendary status.

Motorhead are strange- I rarely listen to their records, but live, they are the greatest band in the world. Absolutely fucking fantastic. Lemmy IS rock and roll.
I can totally see where you;re coming from, doctorbeck- MC5, Stooges, Ramones, Motorhead- yes. That's a list of fuckin' ROCK, right there.

I think that Motorhead are getting their dues, otherwise, as you say, they wouldn't be able to consistently sell out large venues like they do. However I agree with the earlier post that a lot of people think they are listening to 'heavy rock' or whatever and in reality it's featherweight shite, and totally overlooking greats such as Lemmy and co. who really could make their fucking ears bleed.

And that ladies and gentlemen is the most rock post I've ever posted on Barbelith.

Only way to feel the noise is when it's good and loud...

Been lovin' them for ages. I own about 1200 cd's and the largest part by a single artist is formed by Lemmy & co. Or to put it an other way: mate of mine wanted me to join him at a festival featuring Bonnie 'prince' Billy. I'm glad I hesitated 'cos the same day Motörhead is playing at another Festival (yep, summer in Belgium... ) 9th of June, I'll be deaf again.

I just saw them last month with some great opening bands. The problem was that Motorhead's sound mix was awful. Lemmy's voice would just not come through and the drums sounded tinny. Only the ravaging guitar was noticeable. I only noticed this because one of the opening bands, THREE INCHES OF BLOOD, was unbelievably amazing. They have two vocalists, one that sings really high, and one that screams. The double assault is impressive. They were easily the highlight of the night considering I saw Corrosion of Comformity and Motorhead and Damn 13 all in one night.

LOVE ME LIKE A REPTILE

Best Lemmy quote ever (note: tbe backdrop of the stage is a HUGE WWII bomber): "Hello, Dresden. I bet you haven't seen one of these in a while".

Motorhead are touring Australia at the end of the year, but it's supporting Motley Crue, and i think the tickets are over a hundred bucks. I wish they were doing their own shows, but I don't think it's going to happen, and I don't have that sort of money to spend on one show.

my first 3 records i ever bought - at age 10 - were by these artists: W.A.S.P., METALLICA and MOTÖRHEAD.
since then W.A.S.P. have become something to chuckle over and remember for nostalgia's sake - and blackie lawless still is a fuckin' animal, only that he forgot how to do good music - and METALLICA died for right after the black album, although i respect what they (might have been trying to do) did with "st. anger".

MOTÖRHEAD on the other head would never ever let me go again! got all their studio recordings plus 2 live recordings and love them all! mother's milk to me.
[probably also explains why i fell for HAWKWIND a bit... if it were not for lemmy...]

everybody should read "white line fever". it's hilarious.

oh, and the thing with GIRLSCHOOL: lemmy is a macho-bastard (hey, everybody's got issues!) and the only reason he did anything with GIRLSCHOOL at all, was because he was dating... the whole band. which doesn't mean that GIRLSCHOOL didn't have their moments, which they did. file that under the same category as W.A.S.P.

glad girlschool got a mention, as they were supporting motorhead when i saw them recently and they were really much better than i remembered, a really raw punk sound, full of attitude and some great riffs. sadly they did not join motorhead for 'please don't touch' as that would have been a life-highlight for me, but they did end with 999 emergency. i think like motorhead they had more punk / stooges / ramones than the metal tag suggests.
and would just to like encourage anyone who is dihtering to get those tickets for the bomber tour just about setting off around england soon

Whoa Juan, back up - Lemmy's ILL? Surely that's a physiological impossibility. The man's made of tungsten and granite.

Officially, Lem is in the hospital after collapsing due to dehydration. Since it takes longer than a few days to get the ol' bastard back on his feet, I suspect there's more going on than is being told. Might as well call it illness.

I remember a few years back he cancelled a bunch of gigs after collapsing on-stage from "exhaustion"- he got better, though- they rescheduled the gigs and boy, was he ever on top form.

Yeah, everyone should read White Line Fever. It's like sitting down with your evil uncle Lemmy whilst he tells you stories about how Philthy Animal Taylor broke his neck in a game of "who can lift each other the highest whilst standing on a flight of stairs".

As for collaborations with Girlschool, Please Don't Touch is one of Lemmy's finest moments if you ask me. Really pissed off that I missed Motorhead recently. I hope he gets well soon and comes back. The way he lives there may be very few oppertunities left to see them.

Apparently his Doctor has warned him that if he STOPS taking the speed then he might die.

So it's Lemmy and Keith Richards ruling the cockroach people after the apocalypse then.

Lemmy and Keith Richards...what a scary couple of names to have in one sentence, have to say he looked in the rudest of health at hammersmith last month so maybe the cancellations are due to worries about taking the 'Bomber' tour around Europe at the minute..

and yes, white line fever, totally awesome book
