would it be viable for barbelith to host a forum for making the sale of items that would be of intrest to members in the community?

This has been discussed before, and I'm pretty sure it was decided against (however, times can change)... in fact, I'm fairly certain that way back, before I was here, there may even have been such a thing.

Anyway, this is more of a Policy issue, isn't it, so I'm moving to chuck it over there!

Yeah, there used to be a Barbelith Marketplace ages ago. Actual sales for money were discouraged or outright forbidden, but trades were hot, and I got some great comics that way.
I think it was dissolved because 1. it wasn't really a *discussion* forum, and 2. it wasn't particularly busy. Everything we wound up swapping (comics & mixtapes, mostly) fit neatly into one of the other fora (comics, music, books, whatever).

So, we have a thread in the Conversation which started with people pimpin' their eBay auctions, and has now moved on to direct selling... anyone know what the issues are here? I'm guessing that a link to another auction site is not a problem... can we do direct stuff as well? Do the moderators need to be aware of any legal implications, and/or keep an eye out for stuff that violates copyright or legality?

Further to that, and I know this was adressed in the legal issues thread, but if someone was trading some "hard drugs" or "weaponry" (each to their own), and they got found out, would Tom be liable for being charged for anything?

If we were to run with this, perhaps set up a "Mirror Marketplace"- separate from Barbelith, for selling the stuff talked about, not talking? So you'd have a fora for buying and selling magic stuff instead of The Temple, a fora for DVDs etc instead of F,TV&T, see?
