I've been fan of this band quite a time, but like their past album ( train of thought ) their new work Octavarium has quite dissapointed me .. All the songs look the same to me, can't see the progressive rock anywhere. Anyone prog-rocker to share some opinions ??

Well here are some small thoughts I had on the matter, I have a full review going up on a site tomorrow which I will probably link to as I am a shameless whore.

I felt this album was an improvement of ToT - this was a lighter and more melodic affair and their were less pointless solo's by Petrucci and Rudess (although if the overly long solo's from ToT were "pointless" is up for debate). Two songs clearly take more than just "inspiration" from other groups which are "I Walk Besides You" (U2) and "Never Enough" (sounding uncannily like Stockholm Syndrome by Muse) but whilst lots of people criticise it for its plagiarism I found the similarities didnt put me off enjoying these two quality tracks.

The title track is at a prog-tastic 24 minutes is undoubtedly the highlight of the album and the 4 minute eerie keyboard/guitar intro is one of my favorites.

More thoughts later/tomorrow

I think pre-release the James Labrie solo album "Elements of Persuasion" was doing the rounds on the internet under the name "Octavarium"

Or perhaps you got the leaked "Octavarium" and dont like it, fair enough if so.

Ok, at last I heard the album .. The title track is just AWESOME, truly one of the bests moments of Dream Theater ... The rest of the tracks, well, are ok but it's really the usual theater stuff and overall lack a bit of interest ( except of These Walls and maybe I walk beside you ). Anyway I enjoyed this album a lot more than ToT and if maybe it's not an "Awake" or "Images & Words" it's quite a good album!

The title track is is by far the best.

I am a recent convert to Dream Theater (only got into them in the past year) but do they release singles often? Is it likely they will release one for this album?

I think there are one or two singles from Images&Words, Awake and Falling into infinity, and also the A Change of Seasons EP ( which contained a 20 minutes track, one of their finest, and recordings from a cover special gig or something ). But they didn't release singles from the past two or three albums ( at last i'm aware of ), so I have no idea ..

I'm resurrecting this thread in light of the release of their new album; Systematic Chaos.

I've listened to it for a few days, and I consider it to be an improvement upon the last two albums. There's been a progression back towards their heavier sound to an extent, but it's not one-dimensional like Train Of Thought was. Production is great, the best since Awake, with every instrument being powerful and none overbearing. Lyrically, it's better than the last couple of albums, but don't be expecting Joyce, it is Dream Theater we're talking about here.

The best tracks on the album are the two constituent tracks of 'In The Presence Of Enemies', and 'Repentance'. The former is the album's epic, their second longest to date and one of the heavier tracks. It's mostly great, and fairly well structured, but it's the only Dream Theater song where the lyrics make me blanch in places, due to their power-metalness. 'Repentance' is probably the album's softest track, it appears to have been influenced by Opeth's Damnation. It's very minimal, with a large spoken word section towards the end of the track.

The rest of the album is mostly strong, bar 'The Ministry Of Lost Souls', which I'm still not all that keen on. But that verdict could change over time. So overall, best album in 5 years, here's hoping they can keep the standard up.
