On that related subject, I am still a little frustrated by the quality of the Laboratory thread - I really think the sheer range of issues surrounding medical ethics, experimentation, health, the greenhouse effect, science and technology, space travel etc. etc. should make that place one of the most vibrant places on the board, but the Head Shop does seem to still cherry-pick the ethical or intellectual threads leaving it as a place to point at shiny things. It's better than it was, but it could be so much more...

which I think is more or less accurate. I was wondering what people thought about this. I suspect it may be to do with the average lither being more arty based and less comfortable with science. Also, to an extent, this is simply an established convention. If you want an in-depth discussion, you put it in the Headshop because that is where all in-depth discussions happen. Thoughts?

I agree with Tom in that the Lab doesn't live up to its potential. Scintilla - your reasoning about the average 'lither being more arts-based than science-based seems likely. The other thing is that often topics are started without a statement of intent - more "look at this cool thing" than "what is the impact of this cool thing on society".

To protect against the Headshop stealing threads from the Lab, we could allow the more specific ethical discussions, that are about one particular definite person or process, to remain in the Lab, perhaps?

That is, a debate about testing on animals in general might get sucked in by the Headshop as it asks a wide ethical question. On the other hand, if somebody wants to talk about a certain company or brand and their activities, maybe it can stay in the lab.

I agree that many 'lithers seem more comfortable with the arts and ethics than with the sciences. I think that's just a reflection of our culture. Remember, most everybody has a favourite book and a favourite band- these are rooted in the common experience, unlike science or philosophy generally which require study.

On the other hand, perhaps because of the nature of what is being discussed, some of the discussions in Music or Art tend to turn into long, repetitive, Opinionated Shitfights Of Atrittion- I know I've been guilty of this at least once.

In the Lab, on the other hand, we see short, succint threads where people swap information and facts on specific, closely defined subject areas. Perhaps it's just like chalk and cheese, and we shouldn't expect the same in each fora.
