Well, 3 is seen as a magic number, I'm aware of that. It's because most things we see are divided into twos- man/woman, sea/land- even our bodies and those in nature do: two legs, two limbs, two tusks, two eyes. So a third "something" suggests something magical or-not-of-this-world.
The number itself is interesting, in that it's the value of three, rather than the sign "3", that has magical properties.
"0" (zero) was often used to represent Female- that old chestnut of the open space, the orifice, the gateway- whereas "1" (one), both as a symbol and a value, was used to represent Male- i.e. the thing as opposed to nothing, the pillar that fills the valley, etc. Sexist I know, but it's not my idea...stay with me.
Okay, so if you have "0" and "1", you have two values, male and female- but what is the third value? It must be beyond our concept of male and female, i.e. a god or godess or monster of some description.
Shiva often has three eyes. |
