MONSTER MAGNET

My oh my,

I hope I won't meet resounding derision, but I felt the need to confess my undying love for all things Dave Wyndorf. Ever since I heard "All Shook Out" on a rock compilation, many moons past, I've been in awe of this fine band.

I love the sludgy 'Spine of God' era stuff, and even the Cult-isms of Powertrip ("When I don't get my bath, I take it out on the slaves"). The lyrics are at times utterly cartoonish, but on the more sedate stuff, I feel, quite personal and oddly touching.

But hey, I like Zodiac Mindwarp, so what would I know.

Anyhoo, just wondered if anyone has any of the early bootlegs floating around, seeing as I pretty much have every record, and wondered if it was any good?

ROCK ON!! etc etc...

Don't go hating yourself for liking Monster Magnet. ESPECIALLY don't go hating yourself for liking Zodiac Mindwarp.

I still don't have the latest Monster Magnet, but "God Says No" is an absolute rock classic. "IT'S TIME TO SUCK THE COCK OF THE FIRE GOD!!!"

Okay, better add some substance to this post. Why do I love MM and the Love Reaction? Well, the simple answer is I love MM because they sound like a Love Reaction who can actually play a lot better. But fuck, the pair of them are just ace, cos they love the things I love, and they love 'em LOUD. "And I was thinkin' how the whole world should have cried on the day Jack Kirby died; I wonder if I'm ill?" Monster Magnet always make me think of what would have happened had Lemmy kept the science fiction lovin' when he was booted out of Hawkwind and formed Motorhead.

Ahh, Monster Magnet. They're ace. It's hard to explain why... they're just ace. A real "fuck YEAH!" kind of band.

"Fuck yeah" is the BEST way I've ever heard them described!!

"Monolithic Baby" is definitely worth a listen. It's very much a step away from the Psych-experimentation of God Says no, and into the classic rock format. Dave said he wanted it to be "a dumb rock record, with lots of air between the chords"..

Got TAB..it is GOOOOODDD..in fact, I have all their studio stuff, inc. the early E.P. with "Freakshop USA".
It makes me weep tears of joy...

There's absolutely no need to feel shame for Monster Magnet love on a board full of Grant Morrison fans. In one of the early issues of his New Xmen run, Morrison introduced a character named Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

"Shut me off, 'cause I'll go crazy with this planet in my hands..."

God, I love Monster Magnet.

They're sort of like the awesome fear-no-cliches world-destroying messianic rock juggernaut I always wished existed... and then I discovered that they did exist.

For my money, 'Dopes to Infinity' is the best mid-point between the awesome stoner/sludge of their early stuff and the crazed rock god posturing of the more recent era. Just an amazing album all round... captures that 'immortal drug-guzzling psychedelic warlord' vibe better than anything since 'Sabbath's 'Supernaut' and vintage Hawkwind..

'Powertrip' has the best lyrics ("started humpin' volcanoes baby, when I was too young.."), but it gets a bit dirgey after the first few tracks and seems to go on forever.

Now I want a MM/KS bastard band! The thought alone makes my backbrain go nigh to shrapnel.
Big, goofy, fun, loud, infused with pathos, antipathy, comics, and crude chaos... and vouched for (musically) by Frank Miller and (visually/stage-performance-wise) by Grant Morrison! And a frontman who reminds me absurdly of a clerk at a bookshop in West Hollywood, and who seems to have defeated aging through a deluge of chemical pickling.
When was the last time Monster Magnet put out an album, though?

er... last year I believe.

It's called 'Monolithic Baby'(?) and has a picture of them playing in front of giant space amplifiers on the front.

It's also really rather good.
"Unbroken (hotel baby)" is marvellous stuff, as is "Supercruel", and "Monolithic"..

"....I TALK TO PLANETS BABY!"

i saw them support queens of the stone age at the barrowlands a few years back and they blew them off the stage.
they had a platform each for the guitarist and the bassist to step onto when the metal took them, for rock's sake!

YEA-UH!

Really disappointed in myself, missing Monolithic Baby! when it came out, but just listened to the album, and damn. Somehow I thought I was destined to be disappointed in it, let down, but, if nothing else, the cover of 'Venus in Furs'... I've a soft spot for albums that run along doing their thing and then throw off a cover at the end; Primal Scream's XTRMNTR, like.
There's just not enough RAWK! in the rock scene... maybe there never was, but in retrospect, the unrocking rock is just erased from my memory.
Am I the only person who's dreamt of Dave Wyndorf playing with Guitar Wolf (when there was a Guitar Wolf, I gather after recent events there may just not be)? One loud, amazing, mutilated sound of glory and fade to white.
