Remember them from the Invisibles? What exactly is a smart drink and how does it boost your psychic powers?

um... drinks which contain chemicals to make your brain work better and thus make you feel smarter. Its kind of like the opposite to feeling stoned...

erowid has a whole section devoted to them.

Try GNC at the local mall, or www.gnc.com. They have all sorts of fun chemicals to play with

Bit dubious about some of these, as it goes. One or two started life as anti-Alzhiemer's meds, and apparently if you overuse them you sometimes get brain changes similar to senility Don't know which chemicals are involved here.
Herbal stuff is dicey as well, particularly if you have any kind of neurological probs. A while back everyone was singing the praises of Ginko Biloba as a pick me up and IQ booster, so I had a try of it myself. That stuff played merry hell with my epilepsy- I had fits for days afterwards.

christ! how horrible! i take ginko all the time, though it neither makes me smarter nor induces fits. i just keep on hoping.

culturally, smart drinks were big back in the day -- they show up in early issues, no? back in the early 90s rave heyday, they were the sort of thing the Mondo2000 guide to culture would talk about and they were tied in to the era that was all about cyberpunk, preweb email, the whisperings about "VR" and all that.

they sort of disappeared and then remerged in mainstream, market ready form as all those sleek little "energy drinks" like red bull. main active chemical in there is Taurine, an amino acid said to be used in nerve building and that sort of thing. i take taurine and occasionally choline as well (a rumored lucid dream enhancer) but honestly, none of it has THAT noticable an effect.

steroid though -- the kind proscribed when you need your immune system depressed -- those make your mind work on ultra-overdrive, it's really the most amazing thing.

smart drinks generally contain a combination of a few of the chemicals in that list. however, you don't actually have to go to the effort of making a drink out of them, as most of the chemicals come in a tablet form anyway. most can be bought from a pharmacy (at least where I am).

Also, some of these chemicals can be used for relieving the aftereffects of other chemicals. I use DL-Phenylalanine occasionally, as it seems to help on those mornings when the brain just isn't working properly.... usually a monday, funnily enough.

its prob'ly not a good idea to be taking lots of these though, or for a long period of time as they can have lasting effects depending on the chemical.

One of the best smart drinks is choline and b vitamins. I would recommend the energy drink Sobe Adrenaline Rush. It tastes like Fresca and contains choline, b vitamins, caffeine, and guarana. Very nice.

There are a few supposedly very good smart drugs that are not available in the US but can be mail-ordered from the UK and other places:

Piracetam (Nootropil)
Vasopressin
Hydergine (a member of the ergot family, invented by Albert Hoffman, the inventor of LSD... supposedly this boosts memory, protects brain cells, and reverses brain damage [!])
