Indie labels join forces

Extracts from: news.com

"Betting that collective action will help give them more market power, a group of 125 independent record labels initiated a new trade group Monday night aimed at giving them more parity with the four major music labels"

"Dubbed the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM)"

"independent labels have long complained that they receive a smaller percentage of revenues from new digital services"

The article itself focuses around the online music market, but after read it I was thinking; will this joining of forces primarily help the artists or will it help the labels make more money?

well i think, unlike with the major labels, an independent label making money IS helping the artists. i think most indie labels do actually care about the bands and musicians on them... if they didn't, they'd really have no reason for existing in the first place. this is of course very different from the major labels, where music is a business first, and an artform second (if at all).

What provisions are in place to stop this group becoming like the mainstream Fat Cat labels?

The important thing is that they maintain that indie ethos. They have to maintain their noble motivations. I'm sure if you asked them they'd say they're doing it to give their artists better deals and such, and we all know that's kind of true and kind of not. Still there's nothing wrong with making a living wage. God knows the musicians aren't doing it for the money. (for the chicks, of course) It's a worthy experiment, and it'll probibly rise and/or fall on how disconnected the middlemen become from the groups.
I'll stop before I ramble myself into a corner.
