The Kubert Brothers' exclusive deal with DC Comics was announced at the weekend. What was not announced was that they will be working on the "Detective Comics" series, with scripts written by Grant Morrison. Expect official confirmation over the summer. Neither DC Comics or Grant Morrison responded to inquiries. Andy Kubert could not respond to questions about future projects.

What a year or so for GM. Seven Soldiers, We3, All Star Superman and now Detective Comics! What will he do as an encore?

Yeah, but he has to work with a fucking Kurbert.

Ugh

Weird...Morrison writing a Batman book? That's odd - you'd think DC would have him work on something more cosmic or super. Morrison and Bats on an ongoing book seems like a weird match. Morrison seems to work better with characters who have super powers or who are more cosmic/magic(k)ally related. (Seaguy notwithstanding)

Hnh.

It's not weird at all, since as his JLA showed, Morrison is one of the few writers capable of writing Batman as anything other than an annoyingly grim cliche.

If GM's using the version of Batman he rolled out for JLA Classified, I'll definitely pick this up (assuming it's not just a wild rumour bouncing round the comics websites).

I think DC needs a Batman with a sense of humour and a crapload of cool toys.

i dunno. given how strong a response there was (at least from what i saw) to G.Mo's depiction of Batman in JLA Classified, i think it would make perfect sense to put him on the character again. i want monthly goodness involving sci-fi closets and a barely restrained arrogance as character flaw, not just rampant psychosis. Morrison makes Bats cool. this is enough for me.

and why the anti kubert sentiment? i mean, i don't see either of them as optimal bat-artist types, but they do good work. either could turn out a quality book, and they have suprised me (positively) on occasion with stylistic choices.

Long as it's not 'Gothic' again, I'll be happy. Nice once, but it's done and hopefully Morrison's moved on.
That was his 'not the really real but the repressed fragmented Denny O'Neill eighties Bat' anyhow, right? Same as in 'Arkham Asylum'?h

I suspect that Morrison may want to go back to something resembling (note, kids, I didn't say identical to) grim Bats. At least, I'm not sure we're going to see sci-fi closet incarnation. Detective is a grim and gritty book - that's its remit.

I think the Batman from Aztec would be a good fit.

I think the Kuberts' art (both of them) is/are ok but nothing that exciting... sort of has an old-school Marvel feel to it that feels old and tired to me.

Would be verrry interesting to see what Grant would do with a solo Batman title; I wonder if this is one of those famous '12 issue runs' that is so popular right now or if this is going to be an open-ended run (if the rumor is even true).

I'd love to have a reason to read a bat-book really. Lapham's Detective is OK, but still. This is good news.

only thing that strikes me as strange is why it isn't on ALL-STAR BATMAN.

and well, we know more or less how it's going to be. part grim Bats in the fog, part psychedelic sci-fi closet Bats in the red sky, solving bizarre mistery around Gotham.

and maybe dealing with some social issues of the Bruce Wayne / Batman mythos, like the movie will, it seems. and Batman will always wins in the end, because he knows best.

and it'll be great. with Kuberts or stick figure drawing by a 3 year-old.

If he writes a sci-fi closet in every issue of a Bats home title, he's missed the point. If we get a good balance between romping adventure and urban grit (grit is inherent to Batman, the same as flight is inherent to Supes) it'll work splendidly.

Three words: Batman. In. Space.

I can see Andy working on this, despite his status as my least favourite Kubert boy (from c. 1993-98, when the Kuberts both illustrated a lot of the x-books I then, foolishly, read.)

Batman in Space works great! Just in other people's books. In the Sixties.

I dunno, Dunc, have you read Detective lately? I don't think Batman's going to space any time soon.

And, Sandra, I seem to remember Batman working pretty well in space during Morrison's JLA run.

The Falcon
10:41 / 09.06.05
Yeah, still reading 'tec, as they call it.

Absolutely no suggestion of him going into space in the current run, yes. Batman is in space all the time when he's on JLA duty, and it's well dramatic, testes.

Spaniel
10:52 / 09.06.05
Yeah, but what I'm saying is that editorial probably won't allow shenanigans of that kind. Tec's been a grim and gritty book for the last eleventy hundred years - that's unlikely to change even with Morrison on the book.

The Falcon

No, you're probably right. I just like to say Batman in space, every so often. I just like soopereroes in space. And I find Batman pretty tiresome these days; both the Azzarello and Brubaker versions were really disappointing and predictable, and they're normally very decent writers.

Though, the more I think about Kubert, Andrew drawing Batman the more it makes sense. He can go back to some of that scratchy style, and it'll look good. Janson inks'd top it off proper. Cape-flashes, everyplace. W00t.

Also: Morrison always writes Batman as gritty n' grim. He just doesn't really do the tedious angst. There is a difference.

True, but I still think the space bit's gonna be left out.

I imagine Morrison might play up the Batman: International Millionaire Ninja Playboy Genius angle a bit more than your regular Batman comic does. I hope so, anyway.

(Apparently his favourite line from a Batman comic is "Yes, the Batman digs this day".)

Don't forget superspy. It's kind of hard to have "International millionaire ninja playboy genius" without getting the superspy bit in.

However, I don't know if I'd want Senor Morizon to do this Batman the way he does him in his JLA comics. I'm all for a less angsty Batman but the scifi closet doesn't seem as appropriate in a solo book as it does when he surrounded by people who fly around, have golden lassos, glowing rings and such.

One thing I would like to return is the " 'Cheating?' 'Winning.' " mentality. That was spot on.

Mario
17:19 / 11.06.05
I would suggest that Ninja covers Superspy, much as International Millionaire Playboy is a bit redundant.

Given that this is Grant, I would recommend terminology like "Poly-National, Trans-Billionaire, Ultra-Intelligent, Hyper-Ninja"

I think the Kuberts' art ... sort of has an old-school Marvel feel to it that feels old and tired to me.

Mid 90s Marvel and old-school Marvel are two different things.

Every face he draws looks like this redneck stoner that used to live next door to me. Even the women... Both the Kubert brothers could stand to learn more from their father...

There old artwork was very like Papa Kubert's - that godawful 'Clash' series they did for DC aeons ago for example... The 90's mutants 'r' us times just fucked 'em in my opinion. But fuck it, they're competent storytellers, and I've never seen them do Bats. Don't think this will manifest though. Not really sure why, just seems a bit...fuzzy.

for one thing I believe Senor Morrizon [much better then "George", this one] will come up with at least one or two new wicked villains with enough madness potential to show how Batman is crazy himself, like some of his better villains do.

I'm not sure Morrison likes the whole Batman as a loon school of thought.

Grant Morrison has explicated on Bats in the past, explaining that there are two in his writing, basically: 'Arkham Asylym' repressed, damaged, sexless Bat-Christ the Mad and Suffering, and 'JLA'-style Uber-Bat, who is lovely, witty, underhanded and overachieving, gorgeous, rich leatherdaddy.
There is also the asshole who wears the ears in many comics, at the moment, but hopefully Morrison'll never write him.

Spaniel

Daytripper, hasn't Morrison also stated that he doesn't want to return to the Arkham Aslylum Batman?
I seem to remember him saying something to that effect. In fact, I seem to remember him slagging off AA.

Triplets

Correct. Arkham Batman was a way of purging the shit of Batman's 80s psychopathology out of his system. Very much a one-time thing as Groschl Masamune much prefers to write Psychic Sinanju Playboy Batman.
