The Four of Cups is central to this, I'd say. Life is there for the taking. The universe is offering you something, but you don't see it. It's all there on a plate, but you're not looking. The cups are laid out before you, but you're not interested enough to pick them up and drink from them. A hand appears in the sky and offers you more, but you won't even look up. It's all there before you and it's beautiful, impossibly beautiful, but you don't see it.
The Lovers probably refers to the situation as a whole. It's the alchemical marriage. "We are divided for loves sake, for the chance of union". The mysteries of division. Lovers are divided from one another, so that their union has meaning. Without having experienced the failure to communicate, we can never really appreciate the joy of communication. The act of Love is the merging and union of opposite qualities to create something new.
In the Thoth deck, the symbolism of The Lovers is related to the symbolism of The Emperor and The Empress. They are the two alchemical principles that are combined in the Alchemical Marriage of that card. The presence of The Emperor in your reading, is suggestive of where the problem might be. I'd look closely at the power balance in your relationship, and perhaps issues around control and dominance.
I'd specifically meditate on the qualities represented by both The Emperor and The Empress. These two qualities need to be perfectly balanced if the alchemical marriage is going to be successful. The Emperor and The Empress must see eye-to-eye if the base lead of human interaction is going to be transformed into the brilliant gold of The Lovers. If these qualities aren't balanced in your relationship, then there's going to be problems. You should seek to address this balance.
The presence of The Emperor could be telling you that his influence is too strong in the relationship, and needs to be balanced with other qualities. Or The Emperor could be telling you that more of His influence is needed in your life. That you should be more like Him and assume that sort of role. I'd say it's less likely to refer to an actual person, and more the inner quality that the Emperor represents. |
