Okay, so I thought the Music forum could do with a thread in the vein of the one in Convo.

At least, that's how I'm going to justify starting this thread.

My question: What is that tune on the Sony DVD Handy Cam advert? The one with the french kid rapping? I want it, and only you can help.

has anyone used ancient instruments - i'm thinking hurdy gurdy, lute, etc - in a modern electric context? (apart from the world music stuff that uses indian instruments and stuff) (and drums!)

imagine a lead electric hurdy gurdy...

Astrojax, I use an accordion and a pocket trumpet sometimes, in a band that is usually more about big beats, fuzz-filter-guitars, dirty basslines etc. I'm saving up for a hand-driven harmonium!

astrojax: pick up any issue of Wire. There are about twnety-seven thousand featured artists mixing ancient and modern instrumentation and techniques every month.

Need a consult on a mixtape I've almost finished, but I'm missing a vital 10 minutes to fill the CD. Anyone care to suggest some bands I'm missing here, fisrt half is 'stadium house/trance' followed by a mixed bag of rock, funk and some quieter trance followed by Johnny Cash just because. Any ideas on what I need here?

Mao Tse Tung Said - Alabama 3
Last Train to Transcentral - KLF
Rez/Cowgirl (live) - Underworld
Landmass - FSOL
Polynomial-C - Aphex Twin
Running Two - Run Lola Run Soundtrack
Carbon Kid - Alpinestars
The Best Things - Filter
Unrequited - Therapy?
Run Fay Run - Isaac Hayes
I Changed my Mind - Quannum
Building Steam with a Grain - DJ Shadow
Left Behind - VNV Nation
The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash

I think you can follow that Cash with "I See A Darkness" by Bonnie Prince Billy, if it doesn't slow things down too much. (I'm not that familiar with the other individual songs on there, although I recognize a few of the performers.)

Question: I need to find contact information for producer Craig Street (Norah Jones, Lizz Wright, Cassandra Wilson, etc. etc.). How? How do I do this thing?

Does anyone know whether there are any rumours that those wailing bitches Coldplay may be splitting up at all?

Please say yes please, rugby lads don't need a bunch of nob ends singing about nothing in an " I wish i was Radiohead but look at my girlfriend she is fit but i'm a dick" kind of way.

Do they/you?

Shut up you idiot! Coldplay aren't don't wanna be Radiohead, they're way cooler & they write better songs. Also what the hell is wrong with being into Rugby? I'm well into rugby and i can express myself very well emotionally, as can most of my other rugga mates.

You're just a snob who doesn't like the fact that a leftfield band like Coldplay have made it big.

Did Bing Crosby ever release a cover of Moon River?

AllMusic would seem to indicate no.

I think Andy Williams did one that sounded Crosby-ish.

Andy Williams never had the low end that Der Bingle did. Mel Torme used to say that playing Bing Crosby was the best way to blow out your subwoofers.

"Moon River" was, I think, just a little too late for Bing. Remember, he was at his zenith in the 1930s and 40s: "Moon River" was written in '61, by which time Bing was—well, he never really retired, as he continued to record sporadically right up til his death in '77; but he certainly wasn't chasing pop hits any more. He just kept working because he fucking loved to sing.

You could be thinking of Perry Como, another cardigan sweater-wearing (sorry, jumper-wearing) white bread singer; his voice was a bit low, though certainly nowhere near as deep as Bingo's.

{Actually, a cardigan is a cardigan on both sides of the Atlantic: a jumper is a pull-over sweater.)

No, I was thinking of Bing Crosby. I have a version done by Andy Williams but for some reason Im remembering Moon River as if it was sunng by Bing Crosby. Must be just be time playing tricks with my recollections.

Thanks all.
