Hmm. Certain advantages do come from working at GHS apparently (though you could've fooled me if the majority of the last five years was any real indication).

Occasionally, I get my hands on demo cds from various bands looking for sponsorship from us. I'm not technically supposed to get these, but they make their way to me inevitably anyway.

The last three bands that've come to me in this fashion I a)love quite a bit and b)highly recommend. Stars, Broken Social Scene, and Feist all find themselves constantly on my playlist now. Feist especially. They can all be found here:

What're they like?

Feist is Canadian singer-songwriter Leslie Feist and a rotating cast of European players; you can listen to her stuff by going here and clicking the little CD icon at lower right. Very nice stuff: well-produced indie pop with occasional orchestral flourishes. Feist has a great rock voice—she can open it up into a joyous cry, or work a sexy coo, and she always sounds like she's having fun, which is instantly attractive.

What's it sound like? Um... a less-twee Belle & Sebastian fronted by a less-obnoxious Chrissy Hynde, maybe? Just listen.

I'm particularly partial to "One Evening," which recreates a 70s Steely Dan vibe to gorgeous effect, and "It's Cool To Love Your Family," which actually manages to deliver on the promise of its title—it's anthemic and affirming, muscular guitars and big swirls of strings.

Coincidentally I've just downloaded the entire Broken Social Scene back catalogue over the last couple of days. At first listen it sounds fucking ace. I'll get back to you on it!

I dunno, grant, I'm a bit crappy at describing music, so bear with please. I usually fall back on saying "Hey, you should listen to this," and people responding "Hey, that is pretty good!" Actually, I'll try and throw something together when I'm not working on 45 hours without sleep. In the meantime, I'd say just go with Jack's suggestion and give it a listen.

I'm glad people here are discovering BSS - they've recently announced a tour which, annoyingly, doesn't include the UK. Another album I recommend is Motor Motel Love Songs, by BSS contributor Jason Collett.
