So of late, because part of it is the comic book story I've been working, I've been obsessive about Buck Rogeresque retro rayguns. Specifically the Cadillacs and Rolls Royces of a Cold War childhood. Fins. Concentric rings around the muzzle. Chrome. Those round, Harley-Earle-inspired 'airplane' stylings.

I just bought Eugene Metcalf's RAYGUN book but don't have it in my hands yet and wondered what Barbelithers think is just THE coolest design for a retro zapgun.

I have a great red plastic toy raygun exactly like this that sparks when you pull the trigger, and makes a whizzy whirring noise. The noise is the greatest thing, like those toy cars that move autonomously when you rev the wheels back and forth... The gun's quite small, though, I always wanted a bigger one.

There used to be a really neat site that displayed pictures of rayguns, but I can't remember what it was called. This one is pretty good, though.

When I was in Minneapolis last christmas I came across a selection of cool design exhibits in the middle of one of the sky ways - one of them was a zap gun designed in the 1920s... I'm sorry, this annecdote is going nowhere.

Little boys and their toy guns. *sigh*

Get a bigger dick. It'll do less harm.

Xoc, you know very well I'm not a boy!

I don't feel the urge to increase the size of anything, except maybe my memory. :]

I always like the gun described in the first chapter of Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash":

The gun is a tiny, aero-styled, lightweight, the kind of a gun a fashion designer would carry; it fires teensy darts that fly at five times the velocity of an SR-71 spy plane, and when you get done using it, you have to plug it in to the cigarette lighter, because it runs on electricity.

I'll take that one. Except I rarely drive so I'll need one that can be charged through a USB cable.

You're right. The annual death rate from ray guns is positively shocking.

Nice thread, by the way...

Can't find a decent Google link to it, but Queen Amidala had quite a nice Deco-looking pistol in that "Phatom Menace" thingie. Long, thin barrel.

(Read into that what you want.)

Agreed, agent. I really do think the simple chrome designs are the coolest. A bit more elegance than the clunky super-tech versions.
