A bunch of lost texts from the ancient world are being brought into the light of day thanks to Multi-spectral imaging. Here's a description of the process from the projects website
Included in the finds are a 70-line fragment from a lost tragedy by Sophocles and a 30-line fragment from Archilochos, the Greek Warrior-poet. The Archilochos fragment, which will be released in a few weeks describes the Greeks getting lost on their way to Troy.
The amazing thing is that all these texts from Oxyrhynchus were from it's rubbish heaps.
Fascinating stuff, it's almost like finding the library of Alexandria down the back of the sofa. |
