First of all, explorer is evil. As you probably know, it wont show transparent png's. I know there are workarounds, but I cant get them to work.. what do you use?

NNG How about just rendering normal png color?

I just did a redesign of my site and IE never renders the background png correctly, so it does not match the background like it should.

Sorry to doublepost but I tried the fix and can't test it. I have a mac and don't have any access to a copy of IE6 to test the changes on. Anyone wish to give it a poke/prod?

I'm running Safari on Tiger so I can't check it for you, but I'd recommend avoiding PNGs with transparency until IE can handle them out of the box. Transparent gifs work well, are usually a bit smaller and have good compatibility. If you have problems with "halos" that appear, set the matte color of the gif to the background color you're placing it on. It should do the trick.

Actually, that's what I did. The thing is, IE rendered the color on the png weird and it didn't match. I cried myself to sleep that night.

Rendering the colours differently is something to do with the different gamma-corrections used on Macs and PCs.

What did you use to create the pngs? I think photoshop has a way of letting you choose which gamma type you want.

I've used Mr. Boodman's Sleight for this, with excellent results.
Only in grayscale though, so I can't say how it will turn out with color images.

Correct on both counts. Things often appear darker on a PC because of those settings. So, one needs to take note when creating images on either platform (though mac screens generally look lovely) and average in the experience. Same goes with browser compatibility and web design... finding the average is key to the best experience.

When you "Save for Web" in Photoshop, take note of the small arrow in the upper rt-hand corner. You can play with the color spaces up there to arrive at a setting that eliminates the color problem. It's also a good reason to work with-in the confines of the 216 web palette and hexadecimal numbers.

I used Photoshop for mac, and hexadecimal colors.

What was crazy was that it looked different between IE and Firefox on the same computer.
