Maybe because internet trolls are cowards, and by giving them the impression that you actually find them threatening you are giving them the impression that by saying stupid things over a computer they are actually scaring you. I don’t know, maybe you would call them big… big wasn’t a very good example on my part.

But if mythical trolls were tall and skinny, would you call internet trolls ‘nasty tall men’? Since it’s not insulting to call someone tall, it seems sort of irrelevant to mention it. How about if trolls were overweight? Would you call them ‘nasty fat men’? And if you did call them nasty fat men, wouldn’t you expect me, and hopefully other people, to call you on it? I know you probably aren’t sizist, but do you see how calling people you don’t like “nasty fat men” would be considered sizist? I suspect you do, and I wonder why you don’t see “nasty little men” in the same light.

Can't speak for Nina but the insult brings to my mind not physical stature but emotional and mental limitations. Whenever I've heard it used as an insult its been to imply that the speaker is emotionally or in some other non-physical way more developed than the person being insulted, hence calling a troll 'nasty, little man' given the unpleasant and often demeaning ideas and comments usually made by them. See also 'trying to bring someone down to your level', which I've always associated as being a heaven vs hell kind of image.

However the use of the word 'little' does probably originate from stigmatising people affected by dwarfism and growth disorders and so as a text insult could be easily taken the wrong way. Good as a spoken one though - the word can really be loaded with contempt when said.

"Can't speak for Nina but the insult brings to my mind not physical stature but emotional and mental limitations."

If you reread her post, you'll see that she said that she uses the term because she thought mythical trolls were short, so apparantly it is a reference to height, in this case.

"However the use of the word 'little' does probably originate from stigmatising people affected by dwarfism and growth disorders and so as a text insult could be easily taken the wrong way."

Short people (not just people with dwarfism and growth disorders, but also people who are just a bit shorter than average, like men who are 5'4" and such) are still stigmatized (and I can back this assertion up with links and such, if you'd like), and the word little is used as a discriptive term for short people. Do you see how the situation of using "little" as an insult is somewhat analogous to the word "gay" as an insult? If you hear someone use the word gay in this way ("dude, you're so gay for supporting Bush"), and call them on it, they'll often tell you that they're not homophobic, and that the word, in that context, does not mean homosexual. Regardless, people are offended by the derogatory use of the word "gay".

And how do you think people with developmental disabilities feel when they hear the word "retard" used as an insult? I can't say that I know, as I've never asked someone with a developmental disability about the term, but I suspect that at least some folks would find it hurtful. Mere speculation. The word "retard" has been used both to refer to developmentally disabled people and to call someone stupid for a long time, and I still think it's inappropriate to use it in a derogatory way. Am I too sensitive? I don't know, but it pisses me off to hear discriptive words for minority groups used as insults.

Dude, can I point out that I have no idea whether anyone who posts on the Internet is tall or short so how I could be making a point about their actual stature is beyond me and as for a judgement call about every short person and insulting every short person- that depends on whether you think there's something wrong with being short, doesn't it? I mean, it's hardly a big prejudice in this world, I don't think people are unthreatening or stupid because they're short. Where's the bias?

I'd save this for the next time someone actually calls someone fat or ugly or insults feminism with two carefully chosen words. It happens about once every six months so you won't have to wait long and the vast majority of the board usually thinks it's okay so you'll get to fight with absolutely everyone you once respected and think they've lost it completely.

I'm totally with you on that, N. This all seems a bit, well, strange.

The whole "little man" thing always seems to be to me more about status in society than actual height... "the little guy against big business", that sort of thing... I mean, Hitler was short, as was Napoleon, but they were both "the big man" in their own playgrounds (unfortunately their playgrounds happened to be a whole bunch of other people's actual living environments), no?

So now we know that all Trolls are actually, retarded, little gay men. excellent!

wasn't there a song, "short people got no reason to live". i'll have to look that up again, as i recall it was pretty amusing. Coincidently it was a song introduced to me by a very short person

No no I think little people are actually evil or rather the evil has less space to move around in and so is more concentrated.* In fact I thought this was general knowledge, I mean it was in my primary school little Kevin was such a bastard.

Personally I've always thought that calling someone "a nasty little man", had little to do with stature more so a statement saying that this man in particular is little in terms of generosity, or open mindedness, warmth, love, sincerity, pleasantness or integrity.

*not really for the literalist among you. I'm looking at you We.

You're thinking of Randy Newman's Short People, skolld.

Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
To live

They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet

Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
`Round here

Short People are just the same
As you and I
(A Fool Such As I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's A Wonderful World)

Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
To love

They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
'Round here

In Scotland we had what we called Wee Man Syndrome. This betokened a particularly increased degree of aggression/self-assertion/motivation that might be expected of someone shorter than the average. Anecdotally, in my experience, it always seemed quite valid. I knew a lot of very punchy wee blokes aye looking for a fight. But then Celtic men do tend toward the small and troll-y. And I'm prone to Wee Man Syndrome myself when in my cups (little, bone china cups).

Of course, as Nina has pointed out, none of this is relevant online when we have no idea how tall or not posters are. It was a shock to me that so many Barbeloids are over seven feet tall, when I first began to meet them irl.

But you've been doggedly returning to some good points there, We. Has given me pause.

We - I think I am basically agreeing with you that use of the word could be taken to mean the speaker associates height with positive and negative characteristics, especially in a written context where there are no other clues. Furthermore I would agree that origin of the term as an insult probably does derive from stigmatising height differences.

The point I wanted to make was that when I've heard it used its been in the perfectly legitimate sense of narrow minded, base, bigoted, mean, self-centered etc - all references to character and personality.

Of course I'm not saying that this is the only use of the term and you make good points about why should we want to insult trolls the above terms could be better descriptors of the behaviour they engage in.

Also odd to hear trolls described as tall. Despite being an ardent roleplayer my mental image of trolls has always been that they are small - otherwise how would the troll in the Billy Goat Gruff story fit under the bridge?

In England we've recently had to rename Wee Man Syndrome as Short Man Syndrome in order to distinguish it from the crippling ailment that makes skaters kick themselves in the head and ride around dressed like Oompa Loompas.

Weird. I have, until now, always imagined that 'to troll' in the internet sense was related to 'to trawl' in the fishing sense. Weird because the first time someone explained 'trawling' I thought they said 'trolling'. Which is okay when you're an eight year old D&D geek. Twenty years later, you'd think I'd have sorted the lingo out.

This is a troll:

It regenerates, but is vulnerable to fire and acid.
This is a trawl:

While I don't think it will fare any better against fire or acid, I don't see anything about regenerating in the drawing.
