Theatre Of Blood

As promised in the Woman In Black thread from a while ago, I bring you news of this here stage version of said film. For the uninitiated: A failed classical actor gets his revenge on a group of theatre critics by killing them off in Shakespearian ways. For the initiated: It's not exactly like the film, but works very nicely in its own right, it's set in the 70's and keeps all the good bits (yes, the poodles...)

Currently in previews, it's still being tweaked and changed a bit, but I'd say it's already a pretty darn fine show (although something different has gone wrong each night so far...). Adapted and directed by the people who did Shock-Headed Peter, it stars Jim Broadbent and Rachael Stirling (who is playing her mother Diana Rigg's role from the film) with music by Joby Talbot (League of Gentlemen). It's a good tongue-in-cheek yarn with a climactic Artist vs Critic argument and some genuinely creepy and 'magical' moments. And there's lots of blood and gore. And tramps. And Jim Broadbent is great.

I operate and mix the sound and music, by the way. Tickets may well become scare soon. I cannot, unfortunately, get you all free ones, but you're welcome to stand next to the mixing desk if you want... So, might I see any of you there...? (You got your ticket yet, Boboss?)

Cool - I saw this on Monday and generally enjoyed it.

Moving most of the action to the one theatre was a good move. The gleeful tastelessness of the whole thing was happily played up in the script and they managed to get the right tone.

You could tell it was an early performance - Jim Broadbent fluffed a few lines and there was a little clunkyness in some of the performances - but overall it was a lot of fun.

My word, this has me really excited.
I luuurvvve Vincent Price, and this one's up among my favourites...
Add an all star musical of "Dr. Phibes", and I need not live a day longer..

speaking of such gore-flick-to-musical switches, y'all seen this?:

How's the fencing scene? I was just thinking of that out of nowhere the other night.

It's pretty nifty, grant. They have big swords...

Glad you liked it, Geckodancing. You saw the first preview, which was actually only the second time the whole play had been run fully in the theatre. It's come on leaps and bounds since then, got a lot slicker and faster (we've knocked 10 minutes off the running time) and changed the ending slightly (so it's a bit clearer that that's all, folks). Tonight was the first 'clean' show, but I kinda miss things going wrong (a pyro had to be extinguished and the safety curtain came in last night). It's a really fun show to work on, but it really takes it out of you: there aren't many quiet moments at all.
