This is mainly about writing prose fiction but it could conceivably work for other fields.

In a previous thread we talked about how to represent the specialist speech we might come across in our writing; for example, a policeman. I devised this thread as a meeting ground where we could come to shed personal insights- first hand information- on a topic that we're often called upon to adress in fiction: the greater social strctures our characters inhabit.

I'm leaving the definition of "institution" pretty wide, here- maybe you haver characters working in a hospital, maybe a buddhist monastery...how do/would you handle this and what is your own experience?
