Astral Projection?

Leaving your body and appearing in to astral plane? Is this real? Appearently there are 3 basic steps.

1.Simply lay down with the lights off. Make sure you are completely relaxed. Lie there and be quite and still, calm and clear your mind.
2.Imagine your astral body which may look like grey matter shaped in the form of your body. Imagine it lifting and floating out of your body, floating up to the ceiling in your room.
3.Turn and look down and try to see you body lying there. If you are successful you may want to stay in the room and float around a bit, staying close to the body. Or you can choose to walk through walls and travel to where ever you wish to go. You can fly there or you can will yourself there instantly.

Who believes that this will work?

It does work.Seriously.Its just not that easy, and may recquire loads of practise.
But those three steps won't be enough.Theres a lot written about this,Crowley writes about the dangers of confusing messages from astral travel and being able to discern actual xeno-contact with ego-contact.Reading about meditation techniques might help you to approach the right state of mind recquired for leaving the body, but the imagery involved in the description of The out of BOdy experience is all together, quite scary.I have found that the mind will only see aspects that it can deal with at any time, and a kind of censor will cover up what you feel you won't be able to deal with.So don't worry about meeting angels or aliens. One of the more interesting aspects of this OOBE,is that you find other entities on the other side.In itself ,this is quite a revelation, but I've read so many scare stories about 'demons'possession etc, that it seemed me that Astral Projection would be quite a violent transition. This has caused a great deal of harm to the investigator.Quite naturally, any new environment causes a hightening of unconscious emotion, but any anxieties you feel about it are,to my knowledge, quite unjustified. There is no pain of separation. No 'click',no 'chord',no demons waiting,no loud noises.Floating is quite easy, but is tricky to master(I can only go in one direction-with help,so far)
Also:You are not dead.It is not 'dying', and you have not transformed into your soul,as far as I can tell.
I started by first getting into a kind of sleep narcolepsy, which is like body paralysis but you can sense where you're limbs are.In this state your awareness of your 'arms',say,-can be adjusted from where 'you think they are',to 'wherever you want them to be'.At this point(about six years ago),I thought that I had done something against nature, and that GOd was about to twat me for 'breaking the rules'.When in fact, all of the things we are taught about ghosts and astral dimensions, have had the effect of censoring them from our objective selves behind a wall of fear and misunderstanding. Its like all the caterpillars are sharing stories about how you only get to be a butterfly if you die.Its more like you are mutating your experience of reality,to encompass ,what I believe,is a place half generated by your own mind, where you can talk and play, with every memory you've ever had,in this world or in any of the worlds you have ever been exposed to in this life,or in previous lifes,or lives which are yet to be.In this state, you will not simply be travelling the astral plane, but the dimensions of time as well as space, which are both in flux.In a sense, being able to move your consciousness slowly -into- a dream, but a dream unlike any other, where aspects of your ego which plagued your worst nightmares, have melted to nothing and there is simply the oppertunity to explore a completely new place.Whether this is a new realm created by the mind or not,at the moment,I have yet to discern. There seems to be people waiting there for us to make the jump. However, the effects are completely repeatable, and this opens it up to scientific analysis, and also the possibility that I might not be crazy.

It is possible through following these techniques, that you will waste a lot of time where you could have otherwise been sleeping.I apologise in advance.

1.Deciding that you want to leave your body is quite a strange goal. But just remember, -despite half a million miles of rhetoric,-No One know what the fuck is going on.So it might just be entirely up to you.

Associated fears: a) I’m holding my hand up in front of my face and its invisible.
b)I’m paralysed and I can’t move,I’m going to die.
c)My room has changed shape,I don’t know where I am.
d)there’s an alien at the end of my bed.
e)I can hear angels singing,I think I have wings,..not good.
f)I can’t believe I did it,what does this mean for the future of psychology?
g)I am already dead.I am going to hell.
All these associated fears are useless to you. There is no use worrying about something you might have just created yourself.

2.The first step in going full astral will be to induce whilst in a semi-conscious state: ‘The Phantom Limb’.
This is a psychological state where amputees report being able to sense part of their body after it has been surgically removed.Technically, your mind can always sense where your limbs are,and when they are removed, allegedly, the neural pathways in your brain which used to handle such sensory input from those limbs, have been randomly firing. This causes you to think that the Limb is still there.

You must assume that it is possible to ‘move’ the Phantom Limb, and of course,it is,-But not in normal consciousness.

Within this new state of mind, the trick then becomes- to move your other limbs into new positions, until you can will the movements of all the other parts of your ‘body’ ‘outwards and upwards’ into the air/space/mind/universe/.

3.The state of mind required is,as always, full relaxation. To achieve this often hyped state,I recommend you cheat. The best way to get into a fully relaxed state,is to go to sleep.Cunning.
The trick then,is ,as you are slowly awakening from sleep, you will pass through the stages of unconsciousness to full consciousness. So surely, the so-called meditative ‘full-relaxation’ lies somewhere inbetween?-It does.
And its on this knife-edge between sleep and waking ,that you want to find yourself. You,in effect, send your body to sleep, while you stay awake. This is also perfectly safe and possible.

Like the lucid dreaming exercises, which you may or may not do,you train yourself to remember to effect a balance between mental states.
In this way,you become more in control of the processes of dreaming, and more in control of your sensory modalities that encourages the practises of leaving the dream and going into the astral realms.

Is there any indication that information in the physical world can ever travel via the astral plane?

Er, realistically, I've always integrated astral fings into standard electromagnetic science stuff by figuring that the "astral plane", "astral energies" and the like are actual electromagnetic wavelengths off the top of those that are physically measurable (way out there past alpha/beta particles and all that). I also started to reason that if matter could resonate at an "astral" frequency it could exist in the same space as "physical" matter.

Of course, there's little to no scientific foundation in all that, but it sounds about right.

Um, what I mean to say is that, if I'm right, and you could somehow reliably transmit and receive signals on these astral wavelengths, then yes, you could transmit data on them. And it'd probably be impervious to physical barriers and EM noise, too (although not other astral interference)...

I've never managed astral projection but it might be worth mentioning these guys: http://www.monroeinstitute.org/
one technology they use to help people learn AP is called Hemisync, which is apparently, a souped up version of binaural beat stuff. they have a java version on their site, and you can download some mp3s of their stuff via audiogalaxy. I've not had any success as far as AP goes, but it does do some pleasantly weird stuff to yr conciousness, and I haven't been trying that long....

We had a discussion about repetetive drum beats and their ability to create altered states here. Check it out.

GC, you could try a spinning mantra - I did astral projection a couple of times a few years ago like this. Find something that resonates in your mind and spin it - once it developes it's own momentum it'll tend to kick out the stray thoughts.

Its the same problem coming into the right mental state from a dream as it is from fully awake.Theres all this mental garbage to dispose of.I've found that a lot of what I think about at any time under the category of 'worries',can be collectively pushed away from my immediate mental vicinity, like a cardboard city of unnecessary trauma. Its not that these thoughts are useless, but they can be pushed around. Its a matter of being objective about them.If your head is full of garbage, you need to tune out.Examine what all the garbage is,and then systematically exorcise it from your life.Deal with the people you need to deal with.Pay the bill you need to pay.Get all the petty anxieties out of your system. If its been a month since you called your mum, give her a ring.Make everything in your life as managable as possible,at least until you feel that you are coping. In this state of mind, you allow your brain to have a chance at winding down. And as you relax more and get into the meditation or the dreams, you'll probably find you start to cope with sleep a lot better too.
People keep trauma for so long, that years after we were at school we wake in the middle of the night worried that our report is due,and our homework is late. Its total nonsense, but its garbage we need to exorcise. The mental clarity that comes with so-called 'psychic house-keeping',allows lots of more interesting influences in your life to filter through to your dreams.People who want to experience flying in a dream, and get with the lucid dreaming exercises, usually become lucid in the middle of a dream about something completely differerent from flying.I guess what I'm trying to say is ,the more you take notice of the states of consciousness and the states of dreaming, the more likely you are to find that point between, where you roughly need to be to go Out of Body.

Here I go with this link again!

C.A.S, visit The Astral Pulse. It's Robert Bruce's website. He has all the info you'll ever need on Astral Projection (just type 'Astral Projection' in the search box on the main page.)
If you're really into it, I highly recommend his book, Astral Dynamics.
