Could Barbelith become one of those Amazon resellers?

Just a thought that, with all the reccomendations for books and movies and comics and music that get thrown around,if Tom were to set up one of those Amazon Vendor Rewards things (where if you click through to amazon from Barbelith and buy something, the 'lith gets a commission) then we might help fight the bandwidth demons.

It'd just mean (A) Tom setting it up and (B) pasting the link into the Wiki, so the rest of us know how to make our reccomendations turn into little revenue generating links.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the account is already set up... is there something about this on the FAQ?

Here

Although it doesn't seem to have caught on much.

How much commission does the site get from those links? Could it be fudged for all Amazon purchases made buy members? I dunno, a throwaway, 'Amazon Cashback" thread such that every time someone bought something from Amazon, they posted the link first, then clicked back to the item via Barbelith to score the commission. Would that work / be worthwhile?

Oh, neat. It already exists.

You think it's okay to maybe drop a note about this on the 'formatting links' part of the Wiki?

No, this is very bad. If people start putting direct links to albums in the Music thread I'll be a pauper by August.

Well, I do it for the books I talk about in the books thread so perhaps people should be encouraged/moderators should do some altering, though whether Tom has ever got any money from this...

For the record, I added a link from the 'how to format links' wiki to the 'how to format amazon links' wiki.

Am I wrong in assuming that I could locate a product on Amazon that I was willing to purchase and then modify the URL so that Tom/Barbelith got a slice of the ticket price? No matter what that product is?

It'd probably be easier just to come back to Barbelith, use that link and punch in the ISBN.

Er, okay then, also for the record, I started that thread that was being mooted. It instantly dropped like a stone, but hey! feel free to bump next time you’re in the mood to buy something.

Sally, I meant if I were to buy something that hadn't been linked to from the Lith, like, say, a jacket, inflatable companion, volcanic lair, etc. There are lots of CDs I intend to be getting, not all of them having been recommended or linked-to from here. But if I can ensure that Barbelith gets a piece of the action every time I go on a shopping spree, everybody wins.

lekvar - I might be misunderstanding you, but that's the idea of the thread Bed Head mentions above. If you're going to buy something from Amazon - regardless of whether or not it's been linked elsewhere on the Lith - you can post the modified link and click to it from there.
eg.

Jacket
Inflatable companion
DIY Volcano

Do you mean, can you cut out the posting bit and just modify the URL in your browser? But if you do that, how are the rest of us going to know about the plan to kit out an inflatable army for your volcano lair? It's not just about the money, you know.

Sorry I'd killed your thread, Bed.

Would this work for other sites? Like if I posted a book link from my LJ with the extra special Barbelith modifications, would the 'Lith still get a commission, even though it was linked from another source?

Did any of the above make sense?

It did, and it should.
