The International Front -- AKA "The If"

The International Front – aka “The If,” Grant Morrison’s long-promised novel, which is ever “forthcoming.” How long has he been working on this? I think I remember him talking about it at least in the late ‘90s, if not before. I think it was even 5 years ago where I read that “If” stands for “International Front,” so he’s been working on it for that long, at least.

I’m really looking forward to the book, which seems to be a new spin on his original idea for The Invisibles. Morrison’s stated several times that originally the Invisibles was going to be like a William Burroughs version of Jack Kirby’s “Boy Commandos.” Sounds to me like “Wild Boys,” but Morrison eventually molded this concept into the Invisibles as we know it.

I think the latest word (from the Arthur magazine event at some comic store in the US a few months back) is that Morrison is just now in the editing stages. So far, all I know is the book’s plot – an SAS operative must write the manifesto of teenage rebels who claim to be from outer space – but, other than the excerpt on Grant’s site, does anyone know anything else?

Speaking of other long-delayed Morrison projects, I won’t even get into how much I’m anticipating “Pop Mag!c.” Actually, I wish he’d publish that first, but again according to the Arthur event, he still hasn’t even finished it. There’s also the book he promised after completing The Invisibles, which would be an autobiography about the writing of the series, and how it changed his life. He hasn’t mentioned that one in five years or so, as far as I know, so I guess it’s out of the picture.

He was going to come round and fix my boiler as well but I haven't heard anything from him yet.

And then there's the "Sleepless Knights" movie project, for Dreamworks (the script for which was reportedly in a "second draft" as of early 2003). I get the feeling Mr. Morrison's mouth is a little bigger than his calendar, if you know what I mean. Well, at least he's keeping busy, right?

He posted a chapter on his website which read like it was designed to make Michael Moorcock dust off his plagiarism suit. As for Sleepless Knights, he was only writing the script, it's hardly his fault if it then got tangled in development hell, look at how long the next Superman project's been languishing!
