Bidding farewell to the Routemaster

[crossposted from my livejournal

So, I was on the 25 bus the other day -- one of those horrid bendy buses that no one, but no one likes -- and reminiscing about the good old Routemaster open-back doubledecker buses which, as everyone must know by now (unless they've been lurking under a rock), are being phased out of use this year.

As I was reminiscing about how much I prefer the comfort and convenience of the Routemaster to the modern buses (especially those aforementioned bendy monstrosities), it occurred to me that it would be good fun to bid the final Routemaster buses a Proper Farewell.

So I googled to see when they'll finally be phased out, and here are the dates, ganked from Diamond Geezer:

14 Putney - Tottenham Court Road (last day of operation: 22 July 2005)
22 Putney - Piccadilly Circus (last day of operation: 22 July 2005)
159 Marble Arch - Streatham (last day of operation: 30 September 2005)
38 Victoria - Clapton (no final date set, but likely to be replaced by bendy buses in October)
13 Golders Green - Aldwych (no final date set, but will go before Christmas)

I know I'm not the only person who is regretting the loss of the Routemasters, so my idea is to arrange a gathering of sorts, where we meet at one place and bus it to another. It could be that we go from one end of the line to the other (which is the option I favour, because I love seeing bits of London I don't know, and you get a much better view from a doubledecker than from one of those horrid bendy things), but maybe not everyone would want to do that, so I was thinking of the 38, which goes from Victoria through Charing Cross Road to Angel, all nice and central, so people can't complain about the difficulty in getting there, and we can bus it there and back again.

Since most people can't seem to attend a public gathering unless alcohol is involved, then the logical suggestion would be to meet in a nearby pub between set hours, gather to get on the bus, bus to the other end, and have another drink or few at a pub there before bussing it back to the centre of town. Alternatively, if going from one end of the route to another, we could organise something of a pub crawl...

As there seems to be a bit of a window before the final Routemasers are gone, there's a bit of time for discussion. I think it would be good fun to open this out to anyone who is interested, but I guess some kind of date should be agreed on before crossposting it in a bunch of different places.

(But I thought this place would be a good place to start getting ideas...)

Gak. Why do my posts always go horrendously wrong on here?

I pasted that title in a couple of times but it never came up, so I typed it, and when I posted the thread, they all showed up. Bah. I hate technology.

You mean, you don’t want it that way? I thought it must be a song.

Thus it is decreed. If you really want it changed, well, I stand ready to vote on whatever mod you request. But I’d say leave it. Sing it, even.

I thought the 38 had already finished... or maybe I'm thinking of the 19, actually. That sounds more like it.

Yeah. Somebody organise something. I'll show up.

Or, if the 38 is still going, I have very good friends with a warehouse in Clapton, near where the 38 ends, and I'm sure they'd be happy for any alcohol related shinanigans in there.

Oh my. Alcohol related shinanigans indeed. I'm about to fall off my chair.
Routemaster, hurrah!

Fuck all that. Let's pool our financial resources and buy a Routemaster! I read this really funny article in one of the weekend magazines recently all about people who've actually gone and done it and was so inspired. It could be The Barbelith Machine! Like The Mystery Machine only with funkier colours and no master-race dropout called Fred.

Anyone? Anyone?

I had a dream that in the wake of Rover going into administration, the bankrupt stock was being sold on for peanuts... I was seriously considering picking up one for £400, even though i don't really need a car...

I'll be taking the last 38 Routemaster - it'll be on 29th October, someone told me. Various of us took a trip on the day of last old-school 19 from Finsbury Park to Angel, not being arsed to go all the way to Battersea), swigging a few cans of Stella as we went, then proceeded forthwith to the nearby Beirodrome. Which was crap, but had nice beer.

I also did the very last 73 routemaster from Victoria to Stokie (snce I live there) which was very sad. Loads of people were boozing on the bus down, there were video cams filming virtually every minute on the way, crowds of people sitting outside pubs waving, and the mood on the way back was nerdy to say the least. They lay on the oldest Routemaster still running for the final journey (RM5), which has the old bulb lights rather than striplights, and a conductor with ancient ticket machines with souvenir tickets.

Most of the nerds on the last bus were actually employed as bus drivers and conductors or were *super* weird bus-spotters. It was a very strange experience, and one I'd be happy/sad to repeat in October.

The other day I deliberately took the 38 to Angel from Charing X Road and changed instead of getting the bendy 73 direct (it's also a bit quicker). The conductor was helpful, telling everyone where they were, having a joke with the passengers (*not* customers) and generally making the trip fun instead of resembling an underground train journey. If you travel by bendy bus, the multiple doors - with nothing to stop anyone getting on and off at the same time - make for an horrendous suffocating experience when accompanying a small child or carrying anything bigger than a carrier bag, or anytime resembling a rush hour. I thanked him for making the bus a human place to be; I'll miss those people a lot.

I'm planning on sitting on the 13 along the whole route some point this week. Probably from Aldwych down to Golders Green and then a visit to Golders Hill Park (aka Hampstead Hill Park). Though I may just do the route from Finchley Road to Aldwych, depends on how my week pans out, and what needs to be done in town. But I want to take photos.

Who's up for the 38 at the end of the month?

I may even try to plan a more organised pub crawl type thing for the 159 before December, except that I don't really know that route after it gets to Waterloo. Maybe someone else might want to (help) plan something?

I can´t come, but wanted to say, I really like these red buses. And it´s a shame, they are put on the pasture.

We have had these bending buses for years, and believe me, you don´t want to be on one of them, if you had a bit too much to drink. When they are taking a turn to the right, your stomach takes a turn to the left...

Luckily I once had the chance to ride a red bus last year and it was fun! There was a string attached to the ceiling, which totally puzzled me and people were jumping from the bus, while it was still driving!

So I´ll join you in spirit for a farewell drink! *sniff*

Here´s a picture I took last year. The whole street was filled with these buses!

Who's up for the 38 at the end of the month?

As it's a Friday - me, almost definitely.

ooh. possibly me. I love the 38. That, the 73 and 53 are my heart's-beloved London Bus routes.

Anna: the 159 after waterloo goes to walworth, I think, and definitely onto brixton, brixton hill and thence to streatham.

Oh, I know where it goes, but I'm not familiar with any drinking/eating establishments once it goes past Lambeth North -- hence my asking if anyone who does know it might want to organise a more structured pub crawl type thing.

What an interesting idea for a Gathering. I rode a 38 just last night, and have only now realised that may have been my last time on a Routemaster.

Sorry. Very busy day - a laptop got nicked from work with unending consequences of being smirked at by the constabulary and studying CCTV footage of potential villains.

So the new 38 is going to be bendy too. Yuck. Between the 73s, the 25s and the 38s, New Oxford Street is going to be horrid.

What's wrong with the bendy busses?

mondo a-go-go
16:05 / 28.10.05
They're not as nippy as double-deckers, so they slow the traffic down a lot even though they're supposed to be faster, and they have been the cause of near-death and narrow escapes for far too many cyclists (I don't know a single one that hasn't been affected). Routemasters were designed for London, so they fit.

The drivers on bendy buses are aways grumpy because they clearly don't enjoy driving them, and they can't always see all the way down to the back, so I've seen people caught and been caught in the closing doors myself.

And besides, bendy buses are just ugly.
