Yet another computer question

This time I need to know how I can record television on my computer. I understand I need a particular kind of video card, but I can't install one as my laptop is a work laptop. Can you get external devices that do the same thing (I would have thought so), and, if so, how much do they cost?

Also, does the fact that I have a digi-box help? As I understand it the primary function of the card is to convert the analogue television signal into a digital signal that the computer can read. The thing is, as I'm already all digital, that function sounds a little redundant.

You can get suitable boxes for laptops, but they're pricier than your average PCI card.

Basically, what you want is a video capture box. You stick the yellow composite video from your digibox into it, and the sound into your line in. Voila. Now record video and then compress it.

Digital/analogue thing: doesn't make much difference. The "digital' thing refers to the way the signal is transmitted to your TV. It's still output to the telly down the standard analogue cable; there's no equivalent of an optical lead for TVs, as it were. The only thing the digibox makes easier is that it has composite out as opposed to just an aerial lead.
