Soon I'll be drowning in fake blood and viscera, thanks to the generous gifts of t3h flatmate. I have a nice shiny laminated pass to Dead By Dawn 2005, the fairly impressive horror movie festival. Since I know there are some horror fans on here, I'm going to be judge, jury, and executioner for these films, and just for your delight. I feel like I'm typing like Vincent Price talked. Huh.
Last night I went and saw Dead Meat, an Irish film that was created as a part of the Irish Film Board's recent efforts to invest in what they call "High Risk" films. It allowed Conor McMahon (who is very nice and seems like a sweet guy) to actually have money for this film instead of making it with no funding.
I must add, any film starting from the premise of a variant strain of BSE infecting Irish cows and making them into bloodthirsty ghouls can't be all bad, honestly. Zombie cows beget zombie people, and there you have the plot. The effects were that little bit over the top (in a good way) and people laughed a lot throughout, especially when a hoover becomes a weapon with which to suck out zombie eyeballs. Some of the acting was painful to watch, but it's apparent that McMahon really does have a decent directorial talent - that or he got really lucky with some of the performances.
Overall I'd say it was a good film, certainly enjoyable. Some of the camera shakyness caused nausea in my partner, but I was mostly unaffected. Some of the writing touches were inspired, especially the scene where zombies are feasting on a kill, and the protagonists are allowed to just walk past, as the zombies lazily consume the internal organs of their prey and look exactly like nature programmes with satiated lions.
Looking forward to the new Takashi Miike film Three... Extremes as well. |
