According to the UCL Institute of Psychiatry; details here. Now no one, no one, can ever call me a neo-Luddite again for not wanting to use a mobile phone.

Looking closer at this it's not that mobiles and emails cause a drop in IQ rather than they serve as a distraction during IQ tests - which should be fairly obvious...

Ever heard of Attention Deficit Trait?

The theory behind it is that our culture causes us to exhibit the traits of ADD, but the difference between ADT and ADD is that ADD is hard-wired into the brain, while ADT goes away after getting away from interruptive technology.

I think this is all a bit silly - certainly, I'll stop what I'm doing at work to read and potentially answer an email - but if I weren't using email I'd just have to stop and answer the phone. Which generally takes twice as long, because of all the 'how are you?' we tend to do before getting to the point. And you can't listen to the person and decide to respond later when you're less busy, you have to deal with it then and there. So unless they're proposing that we get rid of phones, too, and just have a pile of letters arriving each morning to work our way through, and no colleagues to speak to us, what's the point of this fuss?

I can read at least 7 times faster than I can listen, so email beats phones hands down for efficiency.

Cory Doctorow says somewhere on his website about how his favorite "remix" of one of his books was a rapid-fire text feed that could be read easily on a mobile phone.

The idea that text blurring by that quickly, yet being perceived somehow is really cool and creepy all at the same time.

I'm sure if you spend all your time fiddling with text messages and emails, sooner or later there'll be trouble. But, as another poster said, you'd only be answering the phone if we didn't have these things.

Although...these days, we're expected to be on call all the time, aren't we? It's two in the morning:"Yo man, come down the club!". It's three in the afternoon: "Buy Viagra!"

Given this, do we always find time to write our theses and write our books?

According to Fark.com this newstory turned out to be a Hewlett-Packard publicity stunt. So...uh...yeah.

Awww, really. And here I was going to turn off the computer, stop reading posts and e-mails, and spark up a joint to save my brain.

Maybe I'll do that anyway....
