Logue's Iliad

Has anyone here read Christopher Logue's "War Music" and/or "All Day Permanent Red?" Logue's a British poet who has written, as far as I'm concerned, the absolute best Iliad translation you can find.

He's done this without being able to read Greek, and by jettisoning all those parts of the Iliad that are slow-moving and repetitious. In fact, the only complaint I can level at the guy is that he takes too long to write a single chapter: he's been working on his translation since the early '60s, and so far has only completed a handful of chapters.

I know I'm always linking to external reviews I've written, but it's easier than rewriting the same thoughts here. I've reviewed War Music (which collects Books 1-4 and 16-19) here, and All Day Permanent Red (which collects books 5-6) here.

I just read War Music (that is, the edition that includes "War Music" "Kings" and "Husbands").

I'm not sure that calling it a translation is quite right. Some of the scenes, especially the sacrifices, certainly seem very much in the spirit of Homer but at other points (I'm mainly thinking of his vastly extended version of the scene in which Odysseus beats the mutinous soldier) takes a more skeptical view of war. I suppose you could chalk that up to the necessary adjustments in tone for a modern audience, but it still seems to me a fairly stark departure from translation.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I happen to absolutely love the concept of a hybrid translation/re-write and Logue's poetry, especially in the "War Music" section left me breathless.

Glad you enjoyed it. You should for sure move on to "All Day Permanent Red" and the recently-published "Cold Calls," which is the penultimate chapter. "Cold Calls" was probably my favorite chapter of War Music yet -- Logue just keeps getting better and better.

I've just started reading this. Like it. What's this "pornographic novel" he wrote?
