You're not serious, are you?

All right, one last time, everyboy ready? You'll hear a lot of different stories, but really, 2012 is the badge number of the cop who sold his soul to satan to make a New York precint house into Hell in the coolest supplemental issue of Gen 13 by Warren Ellis and Steve Dillon. Go out and get it, really.

well, according to Terrence McKenna and the Mayan (?) calendar, it's the end of this world. there are others on this board that can lead you to actual sources and info regarding it, but i'm not one of them. If it happens, well, it's preordained and can't be changed. If it doesn't, it's irrelevant or it HAS been changed.

Actually, it refers to the fact that as we approach the year 2012, the number of threads about the year 2012 increases exponentially, until, the point where, on Dec 22, 2012 we have an infinite number of threads about the year 2012.

Actually, replace the phrase 'number of threads about 2012' with 'amount of information', and you'll more or less have one of the theories surrounding 2012 and it's significance. It's also the one which makes it completely impossible to predict what'll actually happen...

my teacher told the class on wed. that the world was gonna end on 2012... Wonder if he's read the invisibles? (or um, Gen 13)

I was the latest to be duped into posting according to this unbreakable mathematical law of the universe. So I consider it my responsibility to save everyone some time:

Here you are

Enjoy.

As I'm feeling ever so slightly guilty about taking the piss and going 'oh not this again', coupled with the fact that I can't sleep, I'm gonna take a stab at explaining Terrance McKenna's fractal Timewave theory, at least as I understand it. Please take into account my current state of sleeplessness and the fact that I don't deeply understand FT or fractals as well as I should.

McKenna started out with the DMT-inspired intuition that time has a fractal structure. He then proceeded to analyse the I-Ching -in particular 'King Wen's sequence'. King Wen's sequence refers to the fact that the Hexagrams are NOT organised in a way that immediately makes sense (or at least, I've not come across such an explanation...) So McKenna drew a graph of the number of lines that change from hexagram to hexagram. He then used standard fractal techniques to recursively map the graph onto itself, producing the fractal timewave, whos ebbs and flows represent the amout of newness(novelty) in the universe. Next, I believe he tuned the graph according to the date of Hiroshima, because that was an undoubtably novel event, and discovered that the graph came to an end in 2012.
Most of this babbling is based om stuff from: http://serendipity.magnet.ch/twz/gyrus/river.htm
along with a lot of other interesting stuff about 2012 and the Timewave.
Once you get your head around the theory behind it all, it does make a certain amount of internal sense, although that doesn't necessarily mean its true. However, the fractal timewave is such an aestetically pleasing theory that it has, and will always have a special place in my heart (or at least until 2012).

There's also something, I believe, to do with the Mayan calender, a system created by people who figured out tons of math and astronomy long before any of those guys with "o" in their names did... well, it ends that day too.

This could also have something to do with the Hopi fifth Sun, which has some rough analogues to the Celestials in marvel comics, or at least, that's the first thing I remember thinking of when I heard about this cyclic idea.

Overall though, even if we somehow transform into super worm beings made out of time (space) that have cool visuals like the end sequence of 2001 or that scene in the simpsons with Homer in the comfy--spine melter--chair (or those cool time travel moments from that cool show from the uncool eighties: Voyagers; which followed two Time Cops and their cool little time watch thingy through silly adventures... consensus reality, the here and now (or the "there and then") will probably seem much the same, possibly shiney-er, and with neater gadgets, hopefully. And better music, more sex, and cooler drugs.

This thread just got sillier and sillier.

By 2012, the silliness will be beyond human conscious awareness and possibly become some form of sentient silliness in and of itself.

Will 2013 herald the the New Era of Silly?

2012 marks the end of the Mayan calander. It is an important date, as the Mayans will need to go get a new calander...

Aren't they all carved from stone?

"Ah, fuck. Are you telling me we had 4,000 years to build another calendar from stone and no one remembered to do it? Now we have to do it now, and that's gonna take forever. Christ, I've got dental appointments, birthdays, and the end of days to remember! For pete's sake..."

I kid you not.
No exageration.
A man claiming to be "Christ" ( and is my brother's boss) told me that in 2012 the gates of heaven will open for one hour...
So there you go.
Thought I would share it.
I'll go now.

No. Just the ones that weren't burned by the European invaders.

The Mayans don't need another calendar. They have three now, and, as I understand it, use the long count less often than the other two (correct me if I'm wrong).

In 2012 the earth will have as many people as the brains have neurons and will acheive conciousness. After reaching self-awareness, it will see the futility of its existence and kill itself and take us all down with him. Damn you earth!!!
