Hey Shaftoe - UK Cup Clash took place on saturday night. Five sound systems from around the world competing for the, er, audio cup. Tony Matterhorn goaded the English sounds for not playing any English artists, then played a Lethal B dubplate, and the whole arena went completely nuts, one of the biggest dubplates of the night. Only other non-reggae artists played on the night were 50 Cent, The Game, Ja Rule, Akon, Mario, & Lloyd Banks

Listen to Ras kwame's show on the 1xtra website for the clip.

And there's me saying it wouldn't work stateside.

Time will, as ever, tell.

Iiiinteresting.

The Roll Deep album 'In At The Deep End' is getting rave reviews, and the bwoyz have already been interviewd by Vibe, Spin and The New Yorker (photgraphed by Anton Corbijn, no less), where they have gone down a bit of a storm...

So what have the press said about “In At The Deep End” so far:

“Finally, a UK urban posse that knows how to write hits. In At The Deep End is everything the grime scene once threatened. You wait ages for the next Dizzee Rascal then 13 come along at once.” 4 Stars, Q Magazine Recommended

“Roll Deep’s consistently startling debut album, is one particularly fine example of just how much fun you can have if you throw away the rule book” 4 stars, Observer Music Monthly

“A musical cut ‘n’ pasting from over the decades with more diversity than a Tony Blair manifesto, it hollas out to the music world. The Eski-boys sound has come of age” 5 stars, Touch Magazine Recommended

Actual hits, eh? Can't wait, I must say.

All Music and Radio threads should begin with a cry of "Hey Shaftoe!"

Having heard a preview i think a few people may be in for some suprises...

As the observer review pointed out the track Avenue is gonna confuse a few of the hard core- and maybe delight a few more- It's built around the 80's soul track heartache Avenue- and relies more than heavily on it (it lifts the chorus in its entirety- Eminem toy soldiers style...) as a musical style i can only describe it as pop (as opposed to grime/ garage/ hip hop etc..)

We could see the Roll Deep crew over shadow Dizzy and break fully into the mainstream with a number one hit...

Yeah, already certain grime fans have expressed disappointment with the album for that very reason, although various members of Roll Deep have stated that it's all part of a careful plan to take over the mainstream whilst releasing other things (vinyl things, I assume) that keep the underground happy.

The forthcoming Kano album is also very varied and not necessarily what people expect from grime if they expect anything - there's a track produced by Diplo, and 'Brown Eyes' and 'Signs In My Life' are very much more hip hop as "we" know it...

I've just got a sampler of it, and it is...surprising, ackcherly. Way different to what I was expecting, even given the reviews.

Especially 'Shake A Leg', which is the poppiest, I reckon, and 'I Remember Them Days' which is h-o-t-t. Could do really well, but you never can tell with these things...It's still extremely London-centric in its core fanbase. We'll see. Out June 6th.

The Album artwork is pretty cool too.

don't really get the press hype around this...

i mean, it's not very grimy, is it? sounds more like UK hip-hop... yeah, exactly.

but i haven't spent much time with it yet. i like 'poltergeist relay'.
