It is pretty cheap ... maybe 1/2 - 2/3 of the price of living in the UK in terms of rent ... fags are a bit cheaper, beer's a bit cheaper, most other stuff is about the same.

If for whatever reason you need to avoid paying UK taxes, Mr S, Belgium is a good place to go. Also excellent are Romania, New Zealand, and if I remember correctly, Zanzibar.

If... well if 'someone you know' had been up to no good in the UK stocks and shares market, then as I understand it, they'd be pretty much untouchable in any of the aforementioned destinations.

At the time, the lawyer was fairly insistent about Brussels, he kept on saying it 'wasn't really so bad.'

If nothing else, you'd probably met a lot of people with innaresting back stories.

I have the same idea Mr. S, I can see myself holding a beautiful glass of strange holy beer, rounded to the hilt on waffles and chocolate, falling ever so elegantly into a cute-as-medieval-romanticist canal in Ghent....
been dreaming via this site for a while...

Hm, I was going to post that one too. But here's another site I found that has some good links.

The cost of renting a place in Belgium varies *greatly* depending on where and how big you can / want to live, and I can't really make an accurate comparison with other countries anyway for lack of data. But if you have any more specific questions you'd like to ask a real-life Belgian, I'll be happy to answer them. Or at least try, because not everything about Belgium makes sense, even to Belgians.

You can easily find cheap and decent rooms like that in cities with a large enough student population.
I live in a university town some 20km from Brussels, and over here the price for such accomodations varies - from as much as 200 euros a month to as little as 50 euro (in that case internet/cable access isn't part of the package - but it can of course be arranged, it's not so difficult to get cheap broadband around here).
