ok, so in a yearish or moreish I may find myself living in the Cambridge area.

Rather than, say, look at a map, I wanted to ask all you folks, how easy is it to get around? Are there trains i could ride around in and stuff equally fun and British like double decker buses, or would i need my own transportation to get to any of the London area places I have been reading about?

Cambridge would require a bike to really fit in. As for getting to London, train or coach or car, and then once there, take you chances with the transport system - all very good, gets crowded at rush hour, delays are common, but it all works and there are normally enough ways of getting around central london that you'll be fine.

Around Cambridge itself, get a bike, you'll be twice as fast as any car.

Cambridge train station is not so brilliantly connected, but it's 45mins-1hr to London and then London's dead easy to get around.

Also, there's a coach station at Cambridge, and the National Express will get you a lot of places, bit slow, but cheap.

The thing to remember is that England's awfully small- if you're used to America/Canada, you should have no problem at all getting to where you want to go- what would probably constitute a nice afternoon's travel or a brief hop on the train would, to me at least, be the sort of thing I'd have to plan for weeks. And take a packed lunch and emergency whistle.
