I picked this up at my local shop today as a joke, but really liked it. Has anyone picked it up yet? Cover is here

It has so far been a retelling of the origin of Mr Invincible, who gained his powers because Deathurge (for some reason marvel copied The Dark Skier from DC for this) promised a newborn MR I's mother he would take care of him.

This is seriously a great and mostly funny, but very sad at times book, and I'll pick up as many issues as they print.

What's Mr. Immortal's personality like? Is he still super-macho hothead? I may pick this up.

I liked it too. It was very dark though, and the reviews have been mostly bad. Those looking for light, She-Hulk-style funness stay away.

It's an origin issue - Mr. Immortal's. All kinds of death surround this poor guy, and after a look at his early days you'll see his bravado and machismo in a different light.

The darker elements of this debut ish clash somewhat with the cutesy humour. The art also contributes to this problem. Perhaps a more surreal style would have suited this story better (I think Duncan Fegredo - of Enigma fame - would have been perfect).

It was good. Next issue: Squirrel-Girl!

I agree that the dark elements don't fit in with the goofy tone...but is there anyone else who sees this as kind of a shot at DC's "Darkening up" their more goofy characters?

Yeah, I thought it was a piss take. I remember the Great Lake's Avengers from the West Coast issues, but the fact that they are making a big GLA thing on the cover (plus a general piss-take tone, what with the diassembled stamp on it). Flicked through it in the shop the other day. Not going to buy it, but that's because I'm on a budget, but it was a fun read.

The angst was so ridiculously Identity Crisisey over-the-top that couldn't possibly not have been a pisstake on the darkening of things. For my part, I thought this was just marvelous - most especially Monkey Joe's little bits at the bottom. "Hey fanboys! Don't take that lying down! Write an angry letter to Marvel today!" I opened to that page and just knew it was going to be worth my $2.99.

comics trivia: John Byrne created the GLA during his West Coast Avengers run. Paul Pelletier's art, very Byrne-influenced itself, is very much aping Byrne's original depictions of the characters here.
