I would love to know how we are all going to cast our votes in the coming general election, so post your voting preference here. On May 6th I'll tot up the votes and post the Barbelith results verses the votes of the British public, and announce the chosen government if the 'lith. If you want to change your mind, then go ahead, I will only count the last post by each individual. Feel free to say why (or why not, that counts as well, all will be counted). I would simply ask that If you are not a UK voter then make that clear.

PS. If anyone feels that this thread belongs in Switchboard then please go ahead and move it over.

Green. Labour will win here, as they will in almost every other Scottish town (although the T*ries may win a single seat in Scotland this time a few hundred yards away), so I may as well go for what I one that gives a shit.

So, let me get this going. I will be voting Lib Dem this election. I support their view on Europe (a big, loud YES), thier favouring of civil services over low taxtaion, and their stance on civil liberties (rejection of ID cards, speaking out against Bellmarsh, etc.). And you?

I'm voting Lib Dem, partly for the reasons you'ver given, partly as a "fuck you, Mr Tony" over Iraq, but mostly because I believe in a strong opposition, and I reckon the LDs could be that (not this time round, but maybe in two or three elections' time if we give' em a chance)- and there's no way I could vote Tory, even based on that principle. I think my hand would fall off.

How I plan to vote on May 5th is between me and the ballot box. The secret ballot has long been the linchpin of democracy, enabling voters to exercise their democratic rights without fear of victimisation. This is a tradition I feel it is important to maintain.

I'll be voting Lib Dem because the guy standing in my area seems okay, the Labour candidate won't get in, there is no Respect candidate and I wouldn't vote Tory if you offered me £100,000.

sleazention, of course the 'secret ballot' is a cornerstone of our democracy, but elecoral surveys, exit polls, etc. also have a long tradition behind them.

A lot of support coming out for the Lib Dems. Somewhat undermines the 'I would vote Lib Dem but they'll never win' argument we keep hearing.

Let's keep going.

WELL DONE sleazenation!

I'm voting for the Lib Dems.

I suspect that Sleaze will be voting for Veritas and doesn't want to admit it.

Thinking probably Libdems, might vote for Kilroy if he promises to bring back Shafted.

Every poll I've seen on non official sites has had the libdems coming out on top...

Dunno. Maybe Lib Dems, maybe Green, maybe someone else, might spoil my ballot. I'm not really getting too exercised by my particular voting choice; I'm more interested in pointing and laughing and grimacing at all the bollocks.

Well, to dodge a whopping extra 30 note of Council Tax where I live, I ain't registered see?

But I can prolly vote in Angus East (the last place where the gov't had me, before I lost them - again) which is a straight up SNP/Con. duel.

And I like Alex Salmond.

Really hoping for big Lib Dem gains though.

Lib Dem, partly because I support (most of) their policies, and partly because there needs to be some kind of strong opposition to Tony's cronies, even if they do walk it this time round.

Lib Dems for me as well, I think, as I won't vote Tory because they scare the living daylights out of me, and I won't give the other Tory party* any support since Iraq either. Also, communitarianism and Ruth Kelley can get right to fuck. Furthermore, the LD social policies seem actually sensible, which makes a change from the usual lawnorder shite.

*Yes, this is a ridiculous oversimplification. I just can't think of anything more insulting to call them.

I'm glad you picked up on that Withiel. I've checked both the Lab and Con pledges and neither of them have got a thing to say about lawn order. Which I for one think is awful, there are a few lawns around my way that taking thinks way to far, un-mown, weeds everywhere. Good to see that there is a party out there willing to tackle this thorny issue head on.

Sorry, I really don't want to screw this thread up, it's going very well, but I counldn't resist.

Would be obliged to vote LibDem or Green because I loathe and abhor that lying smirking arrogant piece of ****, Bliar, and I can't bring myself to do anything that will prosper his cause.

But but but.

Local MP is the third biggest rebel against her own New Labour Govt apparently, and voted against the war, against ID cards, against top up fees.

Plus, Gordon Brown will be clambering inelegantly to the top of the greasy political pole before too long.

Hmmm, torn...

Greens for me for sure. Tories last. Any other kookie right wing/ family values party second last, Labour above that, then Lib Dem above that.

Just as a matter of interest - and if there has already been a thread on this, let me know - what do you UK-based 'lithers think of the First Past The Post electoral system, as opposed to (for example) Ireland's single transferrable vote system?

All I can say is that on whoshouldyouvotefor I was told to vote UKIP, and there's no fucking way I'm doing that.

I got Lib Dem, no surprises there.

I'm not on the electoral roll, for reasons too tedious to enumerate, and so won't be voting. I'm actually not too disturbed by this (even though I would normally say that everyone who can vote, should do so) because my constituency is Bethnal Green and Bow, and I don't know whether I could bring myself to go for any of the candidates there - though I would love Labour to get a bloody nose, and there seems to be a good chance that Galloway will deliver...

It told me to vote Lib Dem. To be honest, I don't really know what to do. I'm never going to vote for the Conservatives, I've voted Labour in the last two elections and Lib Dem in the one before that. My issues with Labour are pretty much the same as everyone else's - infringing on civil liberties and mishandling the war in Iraq - but I'm prepared to accept that they've otherwise done pretty well. I feel much closer to the ideological stances that the Liberals are arguing for, but as someone who has recently had to start doing tax returns, I'm horrified by the idea of even more complexity w/r/t a local income tax. That sounds like a complete pain in the arse. Not that they'll get in, of course, but still - I don't think I should really take that into account.

So I'm kind of split 50/50 between Labour and Lib Dems, with the over-arching anxiety being, of course, that the bloody Conservatives might come in if the votes got split.
