The Tomorrow People

Panic

This show aired stateside on cable in the early 80's, and my elementary school classmates would rave about it constantly. Alas, I was unable to convince my parents to shell out their hard-earned money just so's I could see random British kid's shows.

So I see the first six series are being released Region 1 via A & E, who've also released quality sets of SAPPHIRE & STEEL, THE CHAMPIONS, and everything under the Gerry AnderSun. I purchased SAPPHIRE & STEEL based on a thread here, was not disappointed, and was wondering if TOMORROW PEOPLE is also worth it. Thank you and good day.

No. It was shite. So bad I felt betrayed, hurt and sad when I saw it recently. Treasure your memories of it, they're so much better than the real thing.

Teenage runaways with psychic powers. Evil shapeshifting robots. Alien avatars. A sentient computer named Tim.

What's not to like?

Aw, come on, it's British. What do you expect?

Ooh, Sapphire and Steel? Plodding, certainly, but still very very good. I will recommend just about any of the old ATV series and almost anything on BBC, but I draw the line at this. It freaked me out and awed me as a child but it's just cack.

I absolutely adored the Tomorrow People as a child but I refuse to watch it now because I'd hate to have my happy memories of the show ruined by the realisation that it was shite.

I seem to remember quite liking the Mike-from-Flintlock era show, with some creepy memories of the ‘Bubbleskins’ or something, but I don’t think you want to buy the recent Kristan ‘Todd off of Neighbours’ Schmid series…

What about the clenching hand in the closing credits? (Or was it unclenching?) That almost makes it worth buying.

Unclenching and superimposed over a flower blooming.

It was beautiful stuff.
