I need a job in PR

I seem to have finally found my day-vocation, which will interest and remunerate me until the inevitable Lottery win/book/TV contract. Problem is, if I don't get my current job (I HATE applying for my own job), I'm gonna need a new one in a couple of weeks' time.

So - I have a year of experience in arts/culture PR and marketing (more on the PR side and specifically Museums PR)
- Does anyone work in PR?
- Can anyone give me a job?
- Can anyone tell me of any jobs going?
- Can anyone link me to good PR recruitment agencies?

Finder's fee of an evening's drinking on me if anything works out.

I'm sure you are already checking the guardian on a monday (and the jobs section of the guardian website) but it's worth mentioning anyway...

It seems to me that PRs are hired primarily for the contents of their contacts book. I'd start by flexing that. Have you done any work with outside agencies in the last year? Do you know any other PRs? Call them, meet them, sleep with them, ply them with drinks. It makes absolute sense to go about your job search as you would go about your job. After all, if you can't drum up interest in *you*...

Yeah, fair enough, but there has to be a job to get before I can get a job - and that's kinda what I'm after. If people's staffs are full not much point me banging on a closed door.

Guardian - check. Thanks anyhow.

First question, what city are you wanting/willing to work in?

I have a friend that has just started a new company (in Utah). He is a filmmaker, and he and a bunch of his filmmaker buddies have started a coalition, they have a variety of products and services to offer to other filmmakers, ect.

They need a marketing/pr pro to help pitch movie ideas to companies. Also do all public relations, designing advertisements for the coalition and the movies their clients are making. There would be a variety of duties until the company gets bigger. Salary of 30 K and commissions on money brought in, and bonuses for ad designs.

Also, have you looked into doing PR for higher Ed? I have another friend that is PR guy for a college, he makes a good salary and bonuses for hitting up donors for money.

Cor! Not sure I could move to Utah (I'm a London, England gal myself) but educational PR would be fine - not so far from my background in museums/culture. Except that the money-procuring job I think you are talking about is in Development (i.e. fundraising) rather than PR - I should be so well paid ...

Not a fundraising job as much as a PR person that has to do many things, press release writing and image brainstorming are still huge aspects.

Ooh, thanks Jub!

Some encouraging responses so far
- one job I applied for wants to interview me (except I didn't read the small print and despite being called SE10 Creative they are based in frickin' Kent, natch)

- I applied for a junior PR position at the National Autistic Society and they emailed back and asked me if I wouldn't mind being considered for a more senior one which pays about four grand more! Far from in the bag, but nice to know that my CV doesn't home towards the bin. I'd rather work for the Crafts Council though ... and they haven't replied.

PR bible seems to be PR Week, which has a website at www.prweek.com. It's published by Haymarket and costs £3 and has recruitments ads.

Also, very occaisonally there are PR/communication officer jobs on www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk.

I have snagged a copy of PR Week but to be honest there was sod-all in it. Guardian Jobs was much better. However -I shall continue to look through it as long as I don;t have to buy my own copy.

Can I just say that calling your company SE10 Creative even though you're based in Kent is genius. I'd hire them for sure.

"But you're not in SE10."
"See how 'creative' we are?"
"You're hired!"

When do you find out about your own job?
