Just wondering whether any of you have been on a Vision Quest (VQ) and are willing to share the tale. Would like to compare notes on the sturcture of the Quest, the beliefs behind it etc.

I had the good fortune to be able to participate in an eleven day VQ last October, the highlight being a 4 day 'Mountain Time' fast in isolation with no human contact what so ever.

More than willing to share my tale with the rest of you out there, should there be interest

I've never done a 'Vision Quest' proper (there's very few Native American elements in my practice). The most I've done is some solo fasting and 'silence' (being completely silent) for a few days.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing any stories you have to share though.

Questing for Vision has usually entailed the use of Various Plant spirits in my experiences...

many years ago travels in Africa yelded some life changing visions as well... again associated with Plants...well the LARGEST TREES I've ever encountered

Then there was my childhood endevor to become a lusid Dreamer....

Not having any real idea what a traditional Vision Quest (VQ) is supposed to be like, I can only relate my experiences. There are some elements that are from Native American practise, but it has been adapted for a Western experience. The reasoning for this was that most people from a Western culture have lost touch with their roots/the concept of all things are interdependent, that they would find it exceptionally difficult to be able to survive on their wits and nature alone. Please note, I said most people, not all. Just covering my bases

The main tenet of a VQ is for the quester to share their experiences with others when returning from the quest. This is as essential as the quest itself.

My initial experience - prelude to the quest (this will probably be an extra long rambling post, so bear with me please):

********************************************
I first heard about VQ and the like when my mother became involved in a Woman's Circle following the Twisted Hair path. For some reason or another (and I don't think that this is concidence) on my way back from a wedding approx 8 hours drive from my home, we stopped of at a gas station for a break and to stretch our legs. When walking onto the shop, I happened to see the launch issue of an Alternative Lifestyle magazine called Chi (dealing with among others, chakras, astrology, tarot and the like). Concidering the dominent mainstream religion of Christianity, it was great to see that something like this would actually be presented as a mainstream publication, as readily available as Cosmopolitan and Elle. Unfortunately they only ever published two issues. But I digress ....

In this issue they had an article about VQ's being offered in the Cape Town area and the article touched something very deep within me that I never knew existed. I contacted the people involved the following day and booked my spot This was in April of 1999. Being fairly pricey for someone who was earning a basic salary, the first lesson or difficulty was to save up enough money for the VQ, and the 16 hour drive to Cape Town and back. Suffice to say, the will was there and we managed to do this.

We were required to do a walk about mini quest 3 months before, in as natural an area as we could reach. This involved a sunrise to sunset fast with no human contact, in natural surroundings. The closest I could get was the national Botanical Gardens in Pretoria. I saw a deer, a rabbit and a butterfly on my rambling and to me they signified the following:

Deer : Be gentle with yourself and offer kindness to all living things.
Butterfly: You are changing. Honour the change in progress.
Rabbit: Do not focus on your fear. To do this will call that fear to you. Move beyond your fear.

Considering the stage in my life (in a serious relationship that was at a point where I had to make a choice, needing to find my niche and being highly self critical), the omens (for want of a better word) were very significant. The most difficult thing was to sit and be quiet with myself.
********************************************

Next installment of the quest will be available soon Thought I'd do it in chunks as not to overwhelm

Till later ....

How similar is the derive to a vision quest?

I’d been doing this in various forms for years (in a variety of locations, but mainly the city) before I found out anything about psychogeography. I had that amazed sense when you discover that what you thought was a personal quirk was a fully-fledged movement.

Can’t think of a plant ally parallel (and I’m not sure if there are other criteria involved). Maybe tobacco, come to think of it. Funny to think how many of my walks ended in the pub (completely unintentionally, of course ).

VQs can vary greatly from tradition to tradition. However, the basics are consistent. There is a period of ritual purification (usually fasting), followed by venturing out into the wilderness (the "quest" part).

The Visions can come from a number of sources. Psychedelic or visionary drugs are one traditional source. Fasting, dehydration, and heat fatigue are other valid methods to invoke visions. Often these involve a sense of being torn apart and rebuilt by the animal that appears, or journeys to far away places.

Of course, "visions" are not always necessary either. Simply being in an appropriate state of mind and then seeing real animals or signs and interpreting them as important and being what you were looking for is enough.

For me, when I decided to do one, I had a little of both. Lacking access to proper vision drugs like Peyote, Salvio etc, I used good old LSD. For general interest, this works fine, but you have to wait until after you peak and are on the slow comedown phase to do any worthwhile vision work with it. I used the "trip" portion to prepare myself ritually, and then much later enter a medatative trance. There, I managed to experience a couple of intense visions involving animal spirits, the details of which are largely only interesting to myself.

The interesting and unexpected part, was what happened in the weeks afterwards. First off, I should note that this VQ took place in a very urban environment. You make do with what you can. When I woke from my visions, My girlfriend noted a bear paw print in the fog of my window. I noted this, but as bear wasn't a part of the visions I just had, I thought little of it.

In the following 2 weeks, I started seeing bears everywhere: On tv, on posters, on cans of snuff, all getting my attention rather sharply. Being the thick headed sod I am, I shrugged it all off. However, whenever my mind would drift back to the VQ experience and start wondering about it, I would immediately see a bear somewhere, more and more obvious each time. The giant wall sized poster of one outside the museum got my attention, and I finally started to realize what was going on. Walking further down the street, I wonder about it again. My head snaps around and I see across the street behind me a giant wooden bear parade float.

Throwing my hands up in the air I finally accepted what was happening. Much internal dialog followed from there as I learned from my new totem spirit.

That's how it happened for me, when I went out on a limb and asked for it. The lesson is that the shaman knows how to interpret omens, wherever and in whatever form they may come in. Every VQ is unique. What matters is only that you seek, and are prepared to listen.
