Phil Jimenez' Otherworld

lonely as a cloud...
05:51 / 01.04.05
Anyone who reads the Vertigo previews page knows Phil's blurb for this one - he came up with the story after the first Gulf War, and then decided to dust it off recently to see if it had any resonance in the post-9/11 world, or something.
So. It looks pretty, and it actually has some dialog written in Irish. And the main protagonist, Siobhan Moynighan, seems pretty cool and interesting. I don't recognise anything in it from the Irish mythology I've read, but it should become clearer after another issue or two whether or not Phil's making up his own myths in a Celtic setting.
Thoughts, anyone? Or post here if you'd like a translation of any of the Irish.

Oh, yes...previews here and here, articles/interviews here, here and here.

The book looks lovely. The writing is less polished, but overall, it's an intriguing read. But at three bucks an issue, that's thirty-nine dollar investment! I'll wait for the trade (if that price is right).

Withiel: DALI'S ROTTWEILER
08:03 / 01.04.05
Art looks absolutely gorgeous: high-contrast infinite-budget 80s fantasy goodness - and reminds me of a the pastoral section of Fantasia with all the centaurs, gone mad and wild in the woods. Writing...eech... I'm not entirely sure to what extent I could deal with lines like "This is weak" from month to month, and there's something a bit stilted about the panel design on the last page.

Yeah, some of the dialog is a bit "so I was, like, totally! Talk to the hand!"...

I picked this up on a whim, and it was mental, in the best Vertigo tradition.

Celtic translations? Yes, please.

Will type 'em up at home and post 'em here on monday, Duncan.

Looked Lovely, though a little disorienting in some scenes.

It's got me very curious to see how this all unfolds. Odd choices in dialogue and "accents."

OK, translations here...

  • "Cessaire -- A fairich ai... Áilleas aithne Cessaire" (p 33) - Not sure what "A fairich ai" means. "Áilleas aithne Cessaire" means "The beauty of the mind of Cessaire".
  • "Siobhan, táimse tar éis teacht chun tusa a fháil, a deirfiúir - a cholceathrar" (p 33) - "Siobhan, I've come to find you, my sister, my cousin." Siobhan is pronounced "Shiv-awn", incidentally.
  • "An aithníonn tú mo chomhacht?" (p 34) - "Do you recognise my power?"
  • "Dar amo shinsear, Bunaitheoir an chiorcail" (p 34) - "Dar amo" could be a character name; it's not a phrase I recognise. "Sinsear" means either "senior" or "ancestor", and "Bunaitheoir an chiorcail" means "the founder of the circle".
  • "Níl am agam don rud seo" (p 38) - "I don't have time for this...!"

So, there you go. Will post more translations if they turn up.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
15:37 / 11.04.05
I liked it a lot; although, yes, a lot of the dialogue is very clunky. Not even so much the demotic- it's just that a lot of it, while there was nothing "wrong" with it, I couldn't actually imagine anyone saying it in real life. (Although this is FAR from the worst offender in mainstream comics- in fact, probably in the upper third, so I'll let it go). Bit early to say on the story, though from the tidbits we're given in ish 1 I'll definitely be picking up the next one- and probably the lot.

It is very pretty though, which is why I picked it up after leafing through it, I'm hoping it goes somewhere now they've got the intro over.

Preview up here.
I can't help but notice that there is an awful lot of Irish in it, and no translation...it seems like pretty important dialog as well, so it must be very annoying for non-Irish speakers (i.e. probably 99% of comic readers...)

Shouldn't ish 2 have been out today (I'm sure I saw an advert to that effect in my local comics emporium)? Anyone read it?

lonely as a cloud...
08:01 / 29.04.05
Yup, picked it up yesterday. It's a very decompressed issue - deals with maybe the next 5 or so minutes after the end of the first. As I mentioned, there is a fair bit of Irish dialog in it, and it's pretty important to understanding the story, so I really don't understand why it isn't translated. Will post translations when I get a chance...

OK, translation time...
p 6:
"Cá bhfuil tú ag dul? Tar air ais anseo!": Where are you going? Come back here!
"Nach dtuigeann tú? Caithmid Siobhán a chosaint!": Don't you understand? We have to protect Siobhán!
"Tá sise níos tábhachtach ná aon duine againn!": She's more important than any one of us!
"Ní cheart an bronntanas a bhronadh anseo!": The gift shouldn't be given here! (note: "bronntanas" usually means "present"; usually a nice pair of socks or whatever rather than whatever power Cessaire is bestowing upon Siobhán.)
"Droch-chríoch air!": A bad end to it!

p 9:
"Gread leat, a chréatúir! Bás chugat!": Away with you, creature! Death to you!"

p 10:
"Éirish suas agus seas leí!": Rise up and stand with her!

p 30:
"Tar anseo, a dhiabhail, má tá an misneach agat! Téigh trí draíocht mo choimirce!": Come here, devil, if you have the courage! Come through
the magic of my power!
"Tarraing léirscrios ort féin agus ar do mháistir": Bring mass destruction upon yourself and your master.

To be honest, there are a coupla typos in the irish throughout the first two issues so far. And there are several instances where I think better words could have been chosen... but this isn't the language nerd forum, so I'll leave it at that...

I finished the first seven issues today. Does anybody know if it will continue?

FinderWolf

yeah, I thought this had never actually been finished -- not having heard about it in years, I'm assuming it will remain unfinished, as DC keeps giving Jiminez more high-profile, mainstream superhero projects to keep him busy, for the most part...

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
14:40 / 01.04.08
There was that first trade put out, but nothing since that I can recall...

Was it any good? I only read the first two issues and felt a little informationed out, as it were.
